About 5pm. A wee lady in her 60s parked her bike outside the door and sat at the window seat; next thing this female, totally out of it-- clutching a beer bottle--- walks past, checks it out, doubles back and decides she's having it There are maybe six women and six men in the cafe, most of us could see what was going on. The wee lady, about 5 ft tall and tiny with it, fires out: next thing the female's even-drunker male friend appears out of nowhere, looking like an extra from Shameless. I was on my way out by this time, everyone else stays sat--- so I said loudly, 'Could the men give us a hand here, please?'. The wee lass from behind the counter's right there with me......but ALL THE MEN BAR ONE (the smallest and youngest) stayed on their fat useless arses So the three of us got the bike and the wee lady into the cafe while the female's trying to smite her mightily with the bottle, but so drunk she missed. I swear at that point I was about to punch her, but reckoned in a split second it'd be bad publicity if this week's conference organiser was missing due to being in the jail for assault........(red mist but... ;D) Wee lady and bike safe inside, we shut the door while they're giving it hammering and shouting obscenities at the 'wee fat bastard' guy. No harm done and a pretty rare occurrence. Good example of 'bystander apathy' though....

Nah, they were all too busy interacting with the human race on Facebook....... Anyways a bit later on, I saw the jaikie pair again outside the Tube station (apt....) By this point the female couldn't stand and was clinging on to the guy's sleeve to stay upright. Messy. You feel for folks that get that desperate but at the same time, no reason to try and hit an old dear with a bottle.

Exactly illustrative of what is happening to my beloved west end. The dismal barbarians are no longer at the gates; they're through the gates. They think they're allowed in, and no-one's told them otherwise. It's DAMNED annoying.

Phone the Polis nota?? Why? Was somebody speeding, or illegally parked? It is dreadful trying to get a polis in a hurry in the W.E. just now. All calls go through a central line and are then sent to some random Police station, not a good system at all. Anyway, I ,like Rolo am disgusted by the men who were in there, I suspect I know at least two of them. Walking about in that state was in the past a recipe for being lifted for a breach of the peace or a drunk and disorderly, however when that type is so drunk or out of it on drugs, you have the usual social worker defending their rights and loudly demanding for them to be left alone and not to cause them any indignity to physical harm!!!! because of that attitude there is a reluctance by the police to arrest them. I would have helped you Rolo!!

I would have helped you Rolo!! I know you woulda, Bormes. And there weren't any men you know (I'm pretty sure) in there at the time. No harm was done. But it might have been had a couple of people not reacted. Situation defused with no need for polis. But yet, just to fly off at a tangent....tonight about 12 on my way home from the conference at the Grand Central Hotel, I stood in the taxi q in Gordon St. Which seems to have morphed into a field hospital. Why? Within 10 yards of each other, one SOS bus. One Polis car, parked. One ambulance, parked. About 12 beat police and about 6 taxi marshalls. Did I feel safe? Yes. Very. And it's good that we take care of residents and visitors alike. BUT...(and I'm not sure how to say this right)...it does seem a bit mental that so many scant resources get used to deal with what's essentially the culture of mental drinking in our (the whole UKE's) city centres of a weekend. (BTW, the SOS bus--you can climb on if you're so out of it/distressed/ lost your friends/phone/money etc....that they'll take care of you, give you a drink of water, a blanket, medical assistance, help to get you home, and indeed a pair of flipflops if you can't walk in your stupit shoes. So, are we endorsing the culture of getting out of our brains? Or just dealing with the issue in a humane, kindly way and taking care of each other? I'd hope anyone'd help me or mine in distress. But then again, what happened to personal responsibility? I must sound very very old.
