The other day I was in Target and in line to pay. In front of me were an older (my age) set of parents and their adult daughter. They were buying shorts and tank tops and sunscreen. The man looked at me and said I don't know how you live in this weather." I just laughed and said I never go outside. When they had left the young clerk looked at me and said where do you think they might be from? That's a very difficult accent to understand. Yes, you guessed it. Scotland. Very nice people but suffering from our 34 c heat and near 100 percent humidity. It never really drops below 25 c here in the summer. No long cool summer evening. Sadly.

Mate of mine travelling in US was told by a friendly waitress that he spoke very good English for a foreigner. He kept a straight face and thanked her

Now there is a coincidence I was in Target Yesterday trying to buy an electric blanket but they were sold out. I just wish it would get up to 25C it is 11c at moment from a low of 8C top 20C roll on summer. I hate winter never mind only about another 4 or 5 weeks. brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr PS got the leccy blanket at K-mart

I ought to explain that, when I posted the above, I had only minutes previously been e-mailing my friend/sister-is-law who is from the USA but has lived in various bits of the UK for many years. After I had hit "submit", though, I worried that Peony might not see it as funny, and said a lot of "eek" to myself. I'm glad it was a good day. Eek, not above, several posts ago, to Peony.

He kept a straight face and thanked her Somebody, but I cannot recall where, although I do think it was a fellow American meeting him abroad, perhaps in France, complimented James Thurber on how well he spoke English. Thurber's reply was along the lines of why, thank you. I ought to, because I spent 40 years in Columbus, Ohio working on it like a dog.

Houston and Dallas are always trying to best each other. Until I moved down here I didn't know much about Texas. Houston is named after Sam Houston - Texas' first president, before it was a state, it was a country.
Thanks for Bon Voyage.

A guy I worked with in Glasgow claimed his dad was the police chief in Houston . I was sucked right in! He told me it would cost me a pint for him to prove it.
He showed me a pic of his dad, a police sergeant, standing in front of a road sign saying Houston.
How the hell was I supposed to know Houston was a village outside Paisley!!!!!!
Incidentally that guy left and joined the Southern Rhodesian Police.
