With the US moving most of its carrier fleet and Subs down your way Oz, methinks you dont have a lot of choice, a bit like us after WW2 They are down there in force warning China etc., it is THEIR sphere of influence. I think your trade with them will pick up soon? That is absolutely correct. Asia is becoming the focus of the word progress and moving away from Europe. China will become the dominant power in the region and is expanding its navy. I know Japan & Vietnam are both worried by it US is having to counter it by a larger presence their focus is moving away from Europe. We are training US marines here now but dont read too much into that we also train other nations troops I dont think China will have to go to war to expand it will do that by trade... This puter is Chinese China is now our main trading partner with lots of trade with the remainder of the Pacific Rim countries and India. Our trade with Europe has dropped dramatically before WW2 80% with UK now less than 8%

China is scarey from their record on human rights to their environmental attitude. They have already purchased entired mountains in South America for the copper. They practically own us. Now they have maternity vacations here in which a 8+ month pregnant woman boards a plane lands in San Francisco and gives birth then flies home after a week or so. The babes are then US citizens.

The Chinese are well known and respected for playing the long game throughout history, it is nothing new.
The problem is the west being in the thrall of short-termism and the lure of the fast buck, whilst wanting cheap labour to produce cheap consumer goods - the west can't have it always, no matter how many tantrums they throw.
If the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa could get their acts together, rather than spending their time on inter-tribal slaughter, they would be the next big thing industrially. Plenty of natural resources, large percentage of population speaking English and the connections, albeit a layover from colonial times, to Europe.

So right, Nota, you hit the nail right on the head there. The Chinese are only too happy to fill those gaps for eternal stupid consumerism in the West. *I buy, therefore I am....* I remember well discussing this with my late father in the mid 80s in one of those intense student daughter/wise old father conversations. He said then that China would become the biggest player in the global market. Personally I choose not to buy Chinese goods because I deplore their human rights record. Of course it makes not a jot of difference but hell, it makes me feel better not contributing to their economy. No offence intended to the rank and file Chinese people of course, but sometimes you just have to put your dosh where your mouth is. (and I should add, for anyone who doesn't get how the Chinese treat their people, check out The Dying Rooms, made by Channel Four some years ago, I imagine it's on Youtube by now)

Actually, I've done the work for you. First part of the docu is here, and you can find the rest on the right sidebar, it gets even worse, to be honest. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE-U_Pq80OAIt's awful, harrowing and it will break your heart. I saw the documentary when first transmitted here in the UK and it's never left me-- it's shaped my views on China and how utterly brutal it gets. And partly explains why I boycott Chinese goods. I also asked friends and family to boycott--in particular--Chinese-made toys and baby clothes for baby Ms Rolo---and since...

Same here and are buying heaps of Iron Ore, gas and other minerals. More and more Chinese ownership. India is another country that will come to the fore albeit a few years behind China. WE just have to live in harmony with them Big naval exercise at moment off Hawaii umpteen navies including Chinese, US and us ....interesting
