The internet. I hate it. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00wlmj0/Panorama_Addicted_to_Games/ There it is, right there: the end of civilisation as we know it. I've seen a rise in these quite incredible stories in recent years. It is really horrifying; and with what the govt here intends in terms of superfast broadband, the problem here is going to get a lot worse, very quickly. It's so bloody predictable. The games industry are bigger liars than the tobacco industry as far as I can see. "informed choice" my foot. Hundreds of thousands of kids, soon to be even more, spending hours and hours alone, in the dark and unmoving, immersed in addiction. Kids don't pay any attention to - indeed, are largely disdainful of - warnings about anything. If they want to do a thing, they'll do it. Don't try to tell me this gaming thing is just the same as every other teen phenomenon. It is entirely different in all sorts of insidious ways. Previous teen phenomena involved boys and girls, and it involved them being out and about with each other and actively seeking out each other. They were wholesome and healthy (whether their parents or the daily fail thought so or not). Internet gaming couldn't be more different. I predict a lot more of this... kids dying of blood clots from lack of movement, infants and family pets starving to death, the kids being taken away, marriages breaking up; troglodyte grunting twitching weans who can't handle light, can't read write or count, can't speak in sentences, for whom school is a distant memory, who either weigh a ton or weight nothing at all, and breathe with their mouths open.... delightfully wellrounded, productive, proud future citizens. Not. I absolutely fucking hate the internet. The concept was such a potential force for good, and all to predictably - and disastrously - it has been swamped and overrun by the stupids. They are the base of the pyramid, that everyone else is forced to build upon. Folk who think they understand what the internet is and who think it's "a great thing" seem to have completely overlooked that fact. I hate it. It's the end of civilisation as we know it. I don't want what our civilisation is in the process of morphing into, since we have become tyrannised by an out of control, unregulated, undiscerning monster that swallows everything in its path.

As usual, Westie, you are down playing it. Don't worry there are still some of us left who know how to fish, hunt, skin and cook from the wild. We pass on our knowledge happily to the next (and in my case am now passing on to the next again generation) these young ones still prefer the outdoors and I do my bit to encourage them, but you are right there is a great danger from the net.

Do you specifically mean on-line interactive gaming, Westtie, or just computer games? The wean has both--some games like Rock Band for example you can play against competitors (known to you or not, your choice) on the net, others are just straightforward games that you play alone or with mates in the house. There's some evidence that computer games enhance certain skills such as spacial awareness, dexterity and reaction time. Some can be educational; one the wean has is set in medieval Italy and is history based. The war games like Black Ops I detest though. Yet I wonder if they're not just an extension of kids playing sojers...I dunno really Maybe us parents are just so paranoid about safety and letting kids out to play we've created another kind of monster? Maybe some kids have mothers hooked on Facebook and online Bingo, and fathers hooked on....well whatever In another era, maybe those parents would be addicted to gin or shopping or golf, who knows? Totally agree with you re the health issues though. The combination of lack of PE in schools, selling playing fields for property development and the advent of gaming is a bit of a timebomb unless parents are disciplined about computer use. I do recall though about 25 years ago, all my mates were 'hooked' on games like FireAnt. Most of us ended up reasonably productive members of society, I have to say.

I watched my son yesterday rebuild his computer. There had been a malfunction in the power pack which had fried a lot of the gear. I was amazed at his skill and the time he took explaining to me what he was doing & why. I was enthralled watching him. He also built this puter & it works well. He is a real computer geek. He is also a mad keen surfer and likes the opposite sex so both can mix

You know that now kids have LAN parties. They get together with their lap tops and each plays a game. Quite often not even a role playing game that they all participate in. The have a primal urge to be together, I guess, but no real clue on how to be together.
I fear people, and it's not just kids, who must always be plugged into some electronic device. No time to nod and smile, no time or even inclination to give way to those less able or more burdened with packages and babies.
I'm with you Westie, but the genie is out of the bottle, I fear.

And lo... www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00z66js#p00fkd9gSome eejit at a screen for 3 days solid, not eating or drinking, is now deid. Serves him right. and on today's You & Yours on Radio 4 - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00z66js#p00fkd9gVietnam is blocking access to the gaming sites after 10pm at night. Because folk are obsessed, and are going stark staring bonkers. What is wrong wi the orientals??? Why do they seem so susceptible to succumbing to utter mindlessness? Drowning in worthless pish, the world is.
