We had 55mm of liquid sunshine yesterday Oooh, that's a lot! I can smell the eucalypts from here! Today I was in Ayr for a meeting at the UWS campus. I never cease to marvel at the micro-climate just as you approach Prestwick. Suddenly the skies clear and the sun shines over the Firth of Clyde with THE most wonderful views of all the links golf-courses and the isle of Arran. Just stunning! Not for the first time I consider moving out of town. My lecturer pal's thinking the same, and has checked out what's on offer property-wise. Amazingly, we could swop our Victorian flats in Glasgow for similar size ones down there for half the price. Another mate's just moved to Dalry. Got a beautiful estate cottage with about an acre of land with change from her two bed flat up the road here. And a river runs through it...beatiful. We had a eucalyptus tree, mrs n grew it in a pot out side from a seedling, she eventually planted it on front garden one summer, it was about a metre tall and quite symmetrical. By next summer it was about 10 foot high, by the following summer it was taller than the house but reasonably slender and still symmetrical Went out the house one day and the chap next door was up ladders moving his satylite dish, this was his 3rd time moving it because of that flaming tree and they were to polite to say anything and they liked the tree too. So got someone in and doon it came, poured weed killer on the stump and two summers later it was a six foot high again but very bushy, another go at cutting it doon, even more weed killer and it seems to have done the trick this time. The eucalyptus smell and leaves off it were excellent inaw.

Was reminded yet again why I love living here I had to go up to Bunnings a huge hardware store about 10 miles away to buy 2 blinds one 6ft other 5ft and other bits and pieces. On way into store was a lady sitting at a long table with a notice "free gift wrapping for Father's day gifts" I was looking at it and at her when she asked if I was buying a gift for my Father I said "No my Grandfather" she said that was ok and she would gift wrap it. I bought the 2 blinds and laid them on her table. She told me that she didnt believe they were for my grandfather so after a bit of dickering we settled on a nice pink bow on each, I wanted blue for a boy, but I was told she was running out of blue so it was pink or nothing... I settled for pink. So I took them out and dumped them in the car, I had scored a parking possie within 20ft of door!!! I went back in to buy a drain grate and was greeted with "You again? Wha'd ya forget" I told her a present for my father. Got the grate and plonked down on her table where I was told I was pushing my luck so I immediately complained about the poor service and was told "This is Bunning's wha'dya expect?" I said I had forgotten and it was silly of me to expect it. We both had a good laugh I know it lightened my day and I went home grinning I hope she enjoyed the exchange as much as I did. She appeared to Cant see it happening on Forsyths PS Another thing about Bunnings which I didnt mention as I take it for granted is that every Saturday & Sunday they have a sausage sizzle for charity outside their main entrance of all their stores, not a big charity like Red Ceoss but a local one. Today it was Kurang Road Preschool, next week it may be a local School, a kids footie club, or another local charity. It is run by the parents with the sausages donated by a local butcher and Bunnings providing the Stall BBQ and gas free of charge.

It's weird here too, Oz. Today/tonight, no need for coats, boots, socks and scarves on a usually fairly chilly Hallowe'en. It's about 17 out there, heating back off, windows flung open. Not complaining, BTW! Went late-shopping after work for a pair of rather nifty and elegant sheepskin lined boots I'd been hankering after, only to find 30% sale, due to unseasonably warm weather. RESULT! (of course, being Scotland, we'll PAY for this, ohhh yes... )

Not Ugg, no, Oz. They were doing OK up until a couple of years back but like Burberry, their main market in the UK's now "fur coat and nae knickers". Tribal brand snobbery's de rigeur here in the UKE, don't you know Every time we go over to Catalonia on our hols we take an empty suitcase and stock up on the same clothes and shoes we'd buy here-- but at half the price. Only the brands imported from the US and Australia are as expensive there as they are here. Price fixing. Thanks but no thanks! Kurt Geiger/Carvela rule! Uggs are SO last century..

Things have changed we used to do that (buy an extra suitcase) when heading to UK . Good shoes (Saxone & Church) and Scottish knitwear... Pringles jumps to mind. bespoke tailoring (Gunn & Topping? in St Vincent Street) I could get Van Heusen Shirts here. Tweed is too hot to wear here though I had a Harris Tweed sports jacket for yonks until the moths eventually won

Tweed is too hot to wear here though I had a Harris Tweed sports jacket for yonks until the moths eventually won Pringle have continued to preserve their brand, it's very expensive here, like elsewhere but is seriously good quality. Fair dos. Harris Tweed now. A fantastic brand. But heading, I think, the way of Ugg and Burberry, because they're doing that 'diffusion' thing, making smaller items available like purses and keyrings and Ipad covers. 'Affordable' to the masses and I think, selling themselves down. Branding's getting totally tribal. Sounds horrible, I know, but we've got to a place where we 'judge' on who chooses what brands, ach I'm saying it anyway Michael Kors, for example, HUGE here with young professional girls who have decent earnings. Prada, Versace, Range Rover Evoque very big with people who own nightclubs, tanning salons, drug cartels or hairdressing empires. Chanel, Vuitton and Maserati for those who are either uber-rich or work in fashion and get 'gifts'. Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith and Audi for media folks who've done quite well and have a few bob. Hugo Boss, Karen mingin', LK Bennett and BMW X7 for very upwardly-mobile middle aged professionals. Gucci for people of taste and style. Same everywhere.
