Every Prime Minister since Churchill has used any number of "we've got to(s)" and the BBC was, a very long time ago, very careful to use correct English...one of the comments I made to an English person (in regards the use of language), and during a TV, half hour comedy show, was when a waiter was told to "bring me a menu", I suggested that the phrase should have been, "bring a menu to me" and the reply was, "nothing wrong with, "bring me a menu". And Dreiser said, he had long been surprised at the number of rules, regarding English, but astounded by the number of people who tried to follow them.

Observant point, I suppose though being able to communicate well, is more important than being absolutely correct? I was in a number of cases on a different forum, corrected for my spelling and my grammar, however I think it said more about the persons who corrected me and what sort of person they were, than doing any good for the content of my post? That of course is my interpretation of the incidents. We all have various standards of education, however it matters not to me and I suspect most on this wee forum, what our standard of education is, the interest and banter is more an issue regarding content and I think in general the standard is quite good, topical and interesting. Mind you Lachlan, if there is not a standard to adhere to, very soon with regional and even national identities we will soon not understand each other's English!!

Spelling or grammatical errors would never annoy me on a board like this, then again neither (perhaps) seldom do the pedants.....that should be qualified because I have seen where someone berates and corrects another and if the "other" is a real pain in the erse, I do applaud. I remember a very long time ago when clash corrected someone, a work of art, soitwas...am no sayinthit clash is a work of art mind, he is still an erse, mind he did write tae me aboot the "Heidcase".

Whether 'bring a menu to me' or 'bring me a menu' is of no consequence. However this former waitperson might have added a 'please' at some point in the proceedings
