I'm starting to feel worried for our Spanish neighbours. The news is pretty much single-topic over here 24/7; the state of the economy.
Catalonia is very much akin to Scotland in so many ways; a devolved government with responsibility for certain areas of spending and not others. It’s relatively wealthier in terms of income than most of Spain but I see downward trends in my stravaigs about the villages and towns this year. Not in the standard of services, which are aye 100% brilliant, but in visitor numbers.
It’s far quieter than usual for the time of year. You’d normally see a fair mix of Scots, Irish, French plus Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians but this year the latter three just ain’t here. Perhaps they’ve effed off to Greece instead….good news lounger-wise, haha
I’d normally expect a small inflationary increase in prices year on year, but not so this year. Mucho competition for business from hotels, restaurants, supermercados y letting agencies. As in Scotland, many shops that previously thrived have closed this year to be replaced with cheap outlets or just boarded up shopfronts.
People here, like in Scotland, are not particularly greedy but just want to make an independent living. I get angrier by the day that ordinary folks are feeling real pain due to the sheer unmitigated, unregulated greed of a handful of *ankers.
50% of kids here in Spain aged 18-25 have no jobs. Slightly less in Cat.
This is OUTRAGEOUS . We're being trod upon and taken for fools. Yet we're all so effing scared to revolt big-style and those of us in jobs are supposed to feel thankful.
There's trouble coming. Here and at home. We need to send a message and we need to send it LOUD AND CLEAR and NOW....
I can't begin to describe how utterly beautiful it is here on the Brava. It is so gutting that a downward shift seems inevitable.
