Not that I read The Word, because there's nothing going on in music today that I want to read about; but I have immense fondness for David Hepworth and Mark Ellen, who were around also at the start of (what used to be the unquestionably brilliant) Q magazine, (Ellen I believe was the founding editor), which was very significant to me for a while. This closure however is saddening but not surprising.
Everything that is praiseworthy, wholesome, has integrity, is worth something, is dying on its arse these days. Because the youngsters coming up don't have decent music, don't have music as their religion, and because they haven't the attention spans or the inclination to actually read anything. What a worthless, sterile, vapid, talentless world they inhabit. When I'm not being scunnered at how little they know or understand or care about anything, I truly do fear for them.
We now live in a world where people are more interested in the inane witterings on facebook & twitter about latest releases, be they books, films or music. They'd rather that than the considered opinions of experienced writers who are honestly paid for the quality and breadth of their knowledge of their subject.
Also, thanks to the rise of the damnable imternet, people no longer like paying for anything. The internet has ensured that youngsters feel they're entitled to get their stuff for nothing. Freeloaders. Hell mend them. They want more and more worthless useless crud to bug up their gizmos and distract themselves with - but they don't want to pay for it. There is a terrible irony.
Good luck David and Mark, in whatever you find yourselves doing next... though god knows what there is for you to do in this world now. During important years, youse were responsible for greatly entertaining me, informing me about stuff I cared about, and you have a lot to do with the foundations of my sense of humour.
Gawd... two absolutely sterling, top blokes; too good for these bloody dismal times. What'll be next to fall.
"But och! I backward cast my e'e,
On prospects drear!
An' forward, tho' I canna see,
I guess an' fear!"
