I see there's a petition up to save this fine old pub in Woodlands Road from being redeveloped into something more modren.... I'll not be signing it ;D The place is a unkempt hole. It's clear the owners have never spent beyond the basic minimum on maintenance, if that. It'd be perfectly possible to retain an element of character while upgrading the internal surrounds, like the Lismore has done very successfully. It's also been a bit of a live music graveyard for wannabes for some 25 years. It's free entry so they can programme any old shite. And usually do. Not too much to ask to have floors that ain't swimming in beer, disgusting primitive toilets and drunken sadsacks who've been there since 11am.

Good review. I like shape and size of the place but it really is a shithole. Immensly better than any Ashton Lane establishements though. Because there is still a locality to it and you get free books. Oh yeah and their shitty lager costs 80p + less than the same shitty stuff in *sht*n lane.

Their shitty lager costs 80p because the surroundings are so shit, Sir Henry ;D You're right though the shape and size of the Halt holds huge potential if used right, which it ain't just now... Ashton's all touristy, weekend millionairy. That's how they get £7 for a glass of wine and £3.50 for a pint of dastardly Fursty. As ever, aye good to take the middle ground.. plenty good WE pubs, as you know Reasonable prices and don't treat their clientele like cattle. You know who they ur.

Aren't all p;ubs like that -they are in Greenock - but without the character (unless of course you mean the wummin in the corner wae a chib)

I didnae know about this. Have you got a link to the petition?
The Halt is a west end institution. I have very fond memories of it from when I first arrived in the city for uni in the mid to late 80s. It had a great review in the Pub Crawl section of my 1st year QM Handbook.
I saw the wonderful Walter McCorrisken perform there, heard some great music, heard lots more bloody awful music, played there meself, met Jack McLean, first met Tom Shields... and it was from the Halt HQ that Mr Shields masterminded and co-ordinated the campaign for the last statue in Britain to be erected by Public Subscruption, ie the Lobey Dosser statue on Woodlands Road.
When / where will we ever see the likes of that again??
Never thought I'd ever have to say it, but we're really, really struggling with decent pubs in this city and especially in the west end these days. The decent howffs are all winking out, one by one. The decent staff are being let go; how I mourn the loss of big Jim from the Chip. A disastrous decision; he was a master of his art.
All being replaced with faux friendly yoof oriented facebook generation metrofeckinsexuals with baldy nappers or hair gel, dreepy breeks, fatuous fake Essex accents, vapid brains and manbags.
A shitehole the Halt may well be now, but I'd be very very sorry to see it go. But nobody gives a monkeys these days. Another stab in the heart.
Modern life is rubbish.

You should have seen it in the mid to late 80s. A fine, fine pub it was. A real hub of west end activity, and full of brainy, sparky, kenspeckle folk.

Aye, but the mid-80s was 27 years ago!!!
It WAS a fine pub but it's just not been maintained, basically.
A wee sympathetic refurb's in order, shirley? The last thing students want is another modren style bar that costs a fortune. But clean would be nice.... ;D
