The rates can only be met by huge companies or "charities" who of course do NOT pay rates.
No wonder the place is closing down.
Banks, Building Societies, Charities and Multi National shops are almost all that is left, sadly. I blame G.D.Council, they have priced the West End out of business, the same size of shop just down the road in Partick is less than a third of the price for rates. Houses are the same, G12 pays HUGE amounts, yet what do they get for it? Poll Tax would have been a better system IF it had been much lower, only those working should have paid. The rate system is unfair and far, far too high.

It's sickening, utterly sickening that small businesses are being driven out by the global conglomerates. Our high streets are being devastated and homogenised to such an extreme now, choice is limited and local character all but wiped out.

For shame.

I'm sad that Byres is becoming yet another victim. That said, Kelvinbridge and Hyndland both have thriving new 'scenes' with cool independent shops and bars.

Yes and compare the rates !! No wonder new places are opening there.
It is almost like G12 is being singled out by the Catholic Mafia in George Square, seems the East end get lots of help now.
A bit like Celtic being sold the ground for their new stadium for £1. By the Glasgow Mafia, of whom more than half of the councillors who decided on this are involved with Celtic FC !! Funnily enough I am also told the huge car park built for the sporting venue or concerts pay for the parking tickets and that money goes to Celtic, yes on the ground given sorry sold to them for £1. Great way to help your club eh??
A good friend told me of this abuse of power and I suppose it will just fritter out which seems to be happening with the building of the houses that I mentioned last year and the supposed court case. That was the same G council that gave the planning permission with the same Mafia councillor s!!
