A giant of a man who died tonight aged 95.
When asked how he'd want to be remembered, he said "Here lies a man who's done his duty on earth".
Amen to that.

Indeed, Gilly.
Right now though, I want to cover ma head with a pillow and not wake up for days, till the media furore's moved on to the next thing.
All those *heartfelt* yet insincere statements from politicians and public figure nobody's who'd laud Mandela--- yet contradict with every fibre of their being, everything he stood for.
Fortunately, there's WAY more of US than there is of them.

I have a concern for South Africa now and the white people living there. Already they are no longer allowed firearms to defend themselves and before anyone goes on about having a firearm to defend oneself, if you lived there you would WANT one. It is still a shit hole in the main.

Guys, is that really the best you can do on the death of Mandela? No bigger picture thinking at all? <consider your chain yanked right back at you, Oz...>

Guys, is that really the best you can do on the death of Mandela? No bigger picture thinking at all? <consider your chain yanked right back at you, Oz...> I know that for years we have been getting a stream of South African migrants. He was certainly a truly great man was head and shoulders above his compatriots and did wonders for RSA but still not completely successful with streams of people leaving why? Certainly not to raise their standard of living.

I stopped awhile on Nelson Mandela Place today. Huge pile of rain-battered flowers, hand-written messages and Scottish and South African flags.
Now I don't 'believe' in saints or sainthood. He was only a man, but a good and dignified one. If only there were more like him.

I would hate to live in RSA now but perhaps my thinking is influenced by the Seth Effrikan migrants here
