So, Showcase Scotland kicked off today. Embedded in the Celtic Connections festival, we spend 5 days welcoming international delegates to trot like crazy via several gigs a night to see our array of music talent and book 'em for their own festivals/gigs/circuits. 210 delegates gathered earlier tonight as we plied them with Scottish hospitality. The Australians have arrived in force, Oz. Plus; New Zealand, Chile and Argentina (for the first time) and a HUGE delegation from India, Vietnam and Malaysia. Old friends from Italy, Germany, Spain, Catalunya, Belgium, France, Denmark, the USA and Canada. We do business together, it's a win-win. Currently the significant tax income from the Scottish music industry's subsumed into Westmonster's budget. Not for much longer though..

Off to a flyer, Oz! The venues are packed out, likewise the afternoon showcases: standing room only at this afternoon's Gaelic reception at the Concert Hall. As well as the music, our international friends enjoyed some Scottish canapes and wait-service whisky topups Onwards, me (sans alcohol, I'm w*rking!) to the Old Fruitmarket tonight where I saw my favourite band thus far: Papon from Assam: the most amazing fab funky fusion of Indian devotional music with Western influences, including Scottish pipes and whistles. They went down a storm! Here they are, without Ross Ainslie who joined them onstage tonight: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu-dO4NM2c0

Had the best couple of hours this afternoon at Walkabout for the Australian showcase-- in the company of: Shellie Norris Jordie Lane The Mae Trio Jeff Lang Fantastic hospitality courtesy of our Aus friends (the great Aussie BBQ in Glasgow in January---indoors, obviously )----- and such fine music. All the acts were great but for me, Jeff Lang was the standout. SO powerful, jaws dropped, I tell you! We celebrated Australia Day two days early in Glasgow today, Oz. I flung a prawn on the Barbie in your name, G

Head's great Oz. Legs just a wee bit wobbly but hey. Got home safe and sound early-ish doors and relatively unscathed. Although I await reports from the late night Festival club...tis not uncommon to meet friends from previous night making their way to hotel while on my way to w*rk, circa 9-ish. I suspect Qantas might have a few tired and emotional passengers on board the morra night

Well now. Not long home from one of the best Celtic Connections gigs I've seen in its 20 year history. Yeah, that good! At the Hydro last night, a cast of homegrown and international talent from South Africa, India, Greece, Ireland, Australia, Cuba and Colombia, all in fantastic collaboration. Our 200+ Showcase Scotland delegates (plus 6000+ Glasgow audience) had an absolute ball, culminating in every single one of us linking arms for the finale...For Auld Acquaintance.. It was really something. If you have a spare hour in the next week or so, you can see it here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03sz6jkConcert sound by (ahem..) Mr Rolo. Hugely technically challenging gig, this, and I'm dead proud of him. Might even let him off Sunday morning tea duty, he's that exhausted.. and anyway I'm out again early doors to do business on behalf of our Scottish acts before our international friends fly home again later, all tuckered out but it would seem, delighted. I hope you find time to enjoy watching this.

Yeah, Shellie Morris! Get that proxy server sorted out, Oz! I think you'll enjoy this programme: the Mae Trio's version of John Anderson My Jo was beautiful. 5 star reviews in the papers today, so some very happy people indeed around here! Today I hosted a brunch for the weary but happy delegates and a wine reception where Australia and India handed over the baton to next year's international partners: The Kiwis, I'm delighted to say We had a visit from a South African government delegation this afternoon, they're keen to pitch for 2015. One of the chaps (who spoke at Mandela's funeral, I later found out..)asked me if I'd heard of Bill Sweeney, the composer, as he wanted to source one of his works. As it happens, we have it-- so this will now be performed in SA later in the year. AND we got invited to showcase Scottish artists in Melbourne for the big AWME expo and the Canadian Music Alliance later this year. Job done I think. A very tired team indeed but a fantastic week and it feels SO GREAT when a plan comes together

There'll be Scottish industry reps coming out to Mel and over to Toronto with the bands, Oz. No idea who...yet Talk of linkups with a new festival in Dunedin but that's a way off, a year or two, maybe. I'd love to go to NZ, have Scottish friends in Auckland and a cousin in Christchurch. My turn'll come, what's for you won't go by you...
