Bejasus, I saw some right casualties tonight.
I had to pitch up at a young artist's showcase in town so I worked late in the office then strolled through Merchant City, along St Vincent, down Buchanan St to the gig.
Very busy scenes, cabs dropping folks everywhere, folks in their finery for a night out, buskers everywhere doing a roaring trade and just a very good vibe altogether
Unfortunately the gig was in Jamaica Street, which is a WHOLE different ballgame. It's a young teen hangout there, the McDonald's corner. All ok on the way in to the gig, a group of under the influence teens nearly bumped into me, apologised, admonished their mates "Watch out for that lady...sorry Mrs' etc.
The out an hour later was something else. Carnage is maybe slightly too strong a word. There's two boys fighting, with a crowd egging them on. There's a young guy holding his mate (15?16?) who's doubled over throwing up
Smartly side-stepped that only to collide with four, what, 13/14 year old girls cowered in a phone box, totally out of it, trying to hold up one that's completely incoherent and throwing up what looks like her internal organs.
I stopped, got my phone out to call 999, when I heard the sirens in the distance.
Fast forward 15 mins, I emerge from a cab in my very douce West End street only to see some altercation happening in a cab that's just stopped across the road. It looks like people are fighting or something.
So I paused (again!) Cab door swings open and a woman falls out onto the pavement. I am alarmed and halfway across the road by this time. Out clambers some guy with a can in his hand. These people are maybe 40+?
So I watch for a bit, concerned for the woman, who by this time is rolling off the kerb. He tries to pull her back on the pavement but falls over too. An hysterical altercation ensues, she calls him by his name and he hers, so I walked away and left them to it.
Payday Friday scenes being played out everywhere, I guess, not just in Glasgow. And very definitely not just kids.
Messy. Horrible. Depressing.
