OH the drama yesterday Wean's three-year old MacBook had a wee accident-- involving her spilling her hangover cure (H2O) at 5am after a night out for a mate's 21st. The week before her exams start (all her lecture notes plus podcasts of lectures were on it..) gahhhh! So I chummied her to Apple Genius Bar yesterday cos she was in a right state...turned out repairs were gonna be £400 at best, possibly a lot more. Replacement cost of MacBook, even with generous student discount...£900. FECK. Now, I'd been kinda flirting with the iPad for some time, not as a replacement to my lappy but as a more portable solution for when I have to work late into the evening. So, at my problem-solving best since I'd achieved an underspend at year end, I bought self the iPad on the company, so now wean has choice of that plus my lappy to get her through till she's saved up enough of her wages to buy a replacement MacBook. LORDY, I'm *in love* with my iPad already. What a fantastic piece of engineering: beautiful design, very intuitive to use and best of all.......weighs ONE POUND. I don't tend to *materialism* for its own sake but sometimes *things* just make life that wee bit easier.

CLAIM YOUR HOUSE INSURANCE OR IF YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR BANK ACCOUNT IT IS COVERED. GOOD LUCK. NO NEED TO SHOUT, LOL.... Nah, I'm not claiming the insurance, it'd cost me more in the long run, given I've no claims mega-discount! Like I said, there's a wee bit underspend in the company budget so I took an *executive decision* to buy self the iPad. Taking a wee bit of time to get used to the touchscreen keyboard, it slows me down a bit. Might get a remote keyboard, the manual type. Wean's all set up with her notes (saved on hard drive) and can now see podcasts of lectures. Drama over!

Thanks for the tip, Nota. After last year's travails with the Air (and tea spilled over kb) I invested in a remote hard-drive backup. That's what we've used to save Ms R's lecture notes..... It's a Porsche you know....lovely piece of kit. Unfortunately it doesn't drive me to w*rk in the morning though.

Yep, mines is by a company called Qnap, it has two mirrored disks for added security from failure I have it on the hoose network, so all the hoose PCs, TV, pads, sonos can access it, even the printer can connect to it I did have grandiose plans to copy all my iTunes, CDs, DVDs, slides, photies, I've had it three years and put no photies and only some iTues and about three CDs on it - I'll get round tae ra rest wan day................

Call me old-fashioned but I still resort to shouting to Mr and Ms R when it's their turn to get the kettle on. Or take the bins out/load the dishie/whatever. Works for me!

So dae we, its just the stuff mentioned that's networked elekatronically, no mrs nota and me - she just has tae shout and I react like a coiled spring being let go...............efter all its only aboot five yards tae ra kettle n fridge frae the couch. The "Internet of things" is coming though, where every appliance is networked wae everything else - there'll be an app for that too Some of it will be mighty handy, a lot of it will be complete pish

Will the Internet reinvent the Teasmade, that's what I want to know Or pick up damp towels left all over the bathroom by 'somebody'...or heave the bursting laundry basket down to the utility quarters (otherwise known as the ki.tchen)...or take an inventory of fridge contents and magically refill it when I'm out at w*rk? Gadgets? PAH!

If you get a keyboard the next thing you'll be getting is a stand for the ipad, then a printer to attach to it, an external hard drive and disk reader/writer, a desk to put it all on and before you know it you'll almost have a desktop system. And that won't fit in your handbag! I love my ipad because it's self contained and I don't need anything else to get the best from it. The on-screen keyboard did feel strange to me at first but now I don't have a problem with it. The only accessory I have is a case to protect my precious darling.
