www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-27651504Oh this is bad. Two collisions, killing three and injuring six spectators. How bloody awful that just going out to see a sporting event's resulted in this. I've never really understood why rallying doesn't seem to be subject to the same safety procedures, spectator-wise, than other motor sports. Spectators do seem to get pretty close to the roadside, which seems, well, quite risky? But I'm generally pretty risk-averse so probably not best placed to comment. A terrible day for those affected, their families and of course the drivers and navigators as well

A terrible day for those affected, their families and of course the drivers and navigators as well I've been watching ralliying on and off ( more off than on ) for some reason spectators are allowed very near to the action, probably because though, if you were further ack in most stages you would see hee-haw. First rally I ever saw was a forest stage at midnight, even in mid-summer it was pitch black, exciting, noisy and all ye saw was multiple spotlights coming towards you, a helluva noise, choked on the dust then red tail lights is appearing round the next corner. Because of the landscape the rally takes part in, you either have spectators close to the action or you don't have them at all.

There's been a few witness reports today saying that people at the rally we're ignoring marshal instructions to stay at a safe distance. Sometimes there's only so much you can do?
We all take risks daily. Some more than others.

Aye you're right Rolo, particularly when young and you think you are invulnerable, I when young was a wee bit of an adrenalin lover!! Speaking of which, hoping to take a wee 7.5 Metre RIB to St. Kilda in late July with a pal from Lochgoilhead. Should be a wee bit exciting, about all I can manage at my age now!!!!

Wow, the husband of a friend of mine had planned a St Kilda trip last summer, he sails out of their home on Harris. He was to lead a scientific expedition but the weather just wasn't cooperating last year so they had to abandon the trip. I wonder if you've seen the episode of *Coast*, Bormes (my fave tv programme!) where they filmed an attempted landing on St Kilda? The tide was too high that time too, so they had to give up, only yards from the rock. In mid-summer. How amazing it'd be if the weather was good for your proposed July trip. That'd be really something!
