So. 21 years ago today, I lumbered, in labour, in the garden of the Queen Mother maternity hospital in Glasgow's West End. It was unseasonably hot for June. Ms Rolo took her time to arrive--- thankfully not right there in the garden --- but after two very long night and an even longer morning, she finally decided to arrive at 12.06 on the 25th. (And she's still crap at getting up in the morning... just like her ma and da..) I'm reflecting tonight on it all: me and Mr R's tiny wee baby, now a lovely young woman, inside and out. As I've alluded to before here, I was diagnosed with a progressive auto-immune illness when she was only 2 and it tried its darnedest to get me. But due to the generosity of others: my organ donor, the skill of the NHS surgeons, and those that willingly pay taxes into the NHS, my wish to see her grow up was granted. For which I'm eternally grateful. and getting a wee bottle or two of fizz chilled for to clink a glass or two tomorrow..

So Ms Rolo requested Wur Chip for our family dinner on her birthday. Coincidentally we were sat at the next table to the one where my own ma and da treated me to lunch on my graduation in 1978. Nothing stays the same, and nor should it,I guess, but it was just somehow lovely to be there in a beloved place with so many personal histories steeped in the very walls.. Last night we hosted a party for her friends in Arta, the most stunningly beautiful Spanish-themed venue in Glasgow. An absolute delight to see her welcome her oldest friends from school, her new friends from Uni and her evening job down Ashton. The 'oldie' table left the party at an appropriate hour, leaving the young people to get on with it, or so we thought... They'd planned to go clubbing afterwards but Ms Rolo instead invited them all back to ours so I'd only just clambered into my pjs when I heard them clattering unexpectedly down the hall. So it turned into a bit of an all-nighter. Me and Mr R were welcomed into the throng, and waved most of em off as the sun came up this morning. We did find a couple of sleeping souls on the couch/in the den when we finally got up. Lovely young people, from all walks of life and from many different countries and backgrounds. Such a pleasure to have them here and what a great couple of days/nights we've all had. MARVELLOUS!

I bet there was a moment - just a wee tiny one, maybe - when you wished you were far too uncool for her to bring her pals home to. It all sounds wonderful and completely lovely. May there be many more happy years for all. <imagine cake and wine picture here>

This "60 is the new 30" thing can get pretty exhausting, but Another upside to the party coming back here was that we finally managed to get rid of all those TERRIBLY mistaken drinks that've lain untouched for yonks. Why we ever had Peach Schnapps, chili-flavoured rum and of all things, Dissarono, in the house is a complete mystery to me... Me and Mr Rolo had a right laugh remembering all those all night-parties where somebody finally drank the Ouzo we all thought was exotic to bring back in the 80s...

It's hard to watch certain sections of the UKE sleepwalking into the privatisation of healthcare. Because that's exactly what the Tories and their supporters are espousing. A couple of the wean's friends are medical students and the topic of NHS privatisation emerged in the wee small hours last night. One is to be a GP (as her mother is), the other will be a plastic surgeon working in the field of remedial treatment, and is going out to Zambia over the summer as a volunteer. Both were hugely vocal about the inequities of privatisation and totally against the 'ethic' of patients having to produce a credit card before they can access treatment. It was kinda life-affirming, to be honest, to hear them speak so eloquently and passionately.

Sounds like a lovely party. Glad it all went so well and that the wean is a friend as well as a daughter and is secure enough to bring her mates home.
She is certainly lovely obviously takes after her mum!

Rolo Rote
I have lived and been treated under a private medicine system most of my live and to say the is bullshit and a scare tactic. Hospitals treat patients as they require it whether they can pay or not.
Dont you pay a NHS stamp in UK ?
The difference being mainly in elective surgery which would not be free.( eg boob jobs) as it is in UK under NHS
I believe its the same in the US.
