Just me? We do cardies and blankets routinely here at Chez Rolo in late summer but SO chittery this past week, we've caved in and put the bloody heating on for an hour morning and evening. I remember, as a child, in our cooncil hoose in Knightswood, it was unremarkable to wake up to frost INSIDE the windows and maybe just a paraffin heater on for a few minutes while you got up and out to school. That wasn't *character-building*---it was FUCKING MISERY. Yet in Scotland, in 2014, people are STILL scared of turning on their heating for fear of the cost. While our tax money pays for the HUGE cost of Trident, the top-heavy Westminster government and unelected House of Lords, the HS2 railway in South East England, don't even START ME! It's TOTALLY ABSURD to me that, living in an energy-rich Scotland, we think twice, and indeed thrice, before indulging in the *luxury* of a warm-ish home. Me and Mr R both work: how must it be for those struggling on one wage or none? Scotland must be the ONLY country to have discovered oil but still lives in fear of our heating bills. MENTAL.

We turned oors on last week, when the temp fell wan night dramatically, its been on since then but wae the temp turned right doon. It's been about four months since we last had it on and had to bleed all the radiators. This month sees the end of our dual fuel package wae Scottish power, spent big part of he week looking for a new deal, best I could one up with was an company who would be £50 over the year, hardly worth the hassle of changing and becoming a victim of the inevitable fuck up that will generate (wee pun there) Hoping to put new windaes in before Xmas, found wans that are made in Austria that are the most efficient on the market, a tad expensive mind but our current setup is suffering from double glazing breakdown as moisture/condensation is appearing in a few of the modules, even the wans that we have had replaced already. Cheap shite windaes from the cowboy builders, supplied by Hugh Dallas, well known referee and rangers supporter. Pah!

So we now have a late summer heatwave going on this coming week, so heating back AFF Just re swapping provider, I look to do that now and then but the savings are pretty miniscule (couple of hundred quid over the year) compared to the hassle, the paperwork, the having to fight to get overpayments back if you pay DD, all that nonsense Seriously considering the wood burning stove. They're not that expensive, it's the lining of the chimneys that's the bigger outlay. But then you just need a relatively cheap supply of logs or if it comes up your hump, fill the car boot with foraged piles of wood from the nearby copious supplies in the countryside. Re windaes: my mum's the same, Nota. CR Smith fitted the originals that've done OK this past 30 years but all being replaced due to condensation. Chez Rolo doesn't have double-glazing. We just invest in mega-thick curtains!

Managed to get someon we know to put a temp fix in place so day saved, going to look at new setup, this boiler has been quite unreliable, despite its efficiency when working Know a few folks wae wood burners, we looked at it but it would mean drastic changes to living room, as its a modern hoose there's nae existing fireplace or lum, to put a fireplace in would mean a drastic remodel of room. You could consider a burner A&E a back boiler that would heat yer water too. Can't you put secondary double glazing in, it doesn't affect your existing windaes so no need for coonsil tae get involved wae permissions etc and you can do only the main windows.

Yeah, loads of pals have secondary glazing hereaboots in old Victorian conversions and yeah, for good reason, cos it maybe saves a wee bit every year in heating bills. If I'd plain glass windows it'd be a no-brainer. Except chez Rolo are lucky enough to live in a house where all the period features haven't been sold off. Hence thick curtains on winter nights, not secondary glazing... users.colloquium.co.uk/~glasgowwest/manual5.htm

same here electricity bill shot up over $100 in last quarter and we are an energy rich country too mind you it was winter and we used heating quite a bit Guvmint has repealed carbon tax and abolished subsidies to windfarms and solar panels so that should bring costs down (not holding breath) before summer kicks in and we have to use air cond, damned generic modern houses ... not built properly for the climate If using heavy curtains make sure space between top of curtains and wall is sealed otherwise you are going to lose a lot of heat (curtain box or valance) If you have a straight flue ie no bends you can drop a stainless steel flue liner down from top for a wood burner
