So. A wee bit of spiritual healing last evening A lovely thing happened. Come with me now back to 1978. The then 'poor student' Rolo wasn't in the market for expensive concert tickets, so missed Chic live at the Apollo, the first date the band played outwith the US. I think I bought my first Chic record the year or so before and now, 36 years later, let's just say I have a collection. The band quit touring for a few decades inbetween but last year, the collaboration with Daft Punk on Get Lucky, biggest selling single of the year, meant Nile Rodgers re-formed the Chic Organisation and went back on the road. In Catalonia back in June, imagine my excitement to find they were playing Sonar in Barcelona, just down the road from my 'home from home'. Except when I went to buy tickets, they were sold out. DRAT and double DRAT. Hellish disappointed. But. At my debrief for T in the Park last month, I was offered, by way of thanks, comp tickets to the Hydro for the huge Ryder Cup celebration concert last night. Guess who was headlining? Third time lucky, me. And all the sweeter for it.

Talking of the Ryder Cup concert, I met a chap on the train home tonight, whom I ain't seen or spoken to for a couple of years. A few weeks ago he became a bit of a reluctant media highlight, for want of a better phrase, he is a key staff member at Fergusons Shipyard in Port Glasgow. Anyways he got a phone call from a certain Mr A Salmond the other day, telling him that as a personal thanks from This Mr Salmond there were excellent view tickets for him, his wife and the other key yard folk as a personal thank you for their hard work in helping save the shipyard, plus tickets for Sundays Ryder Cup Final, Eck had went to the trouble of finding oot they were golfers. He was so chuffed with this personal gift from Eck, which was a small thing compared to the work put in by Eck and John swinney in saving the yard and their future To say he's over the moon about the yards future is an understatement, jim McColl is a man of his word and the yard will be up to the numbers originally by November with more jobs to come by next summer Asa port boy maself, it was brilliant to find out about the future plans and see someone so positive about the future P.S sorry for hijacking yer thread but ah couldnae help maself

So good when good people get a wee thank you, isn't it?
Such good news about Fergusons. Here's hoping for a bright future for all who work so damn hard there.

DAMNED good to hear that Ferguson's got a new Calmac order and that everyone laid off from the yard will get their jobs back---plus some! Just shows what capital investment can do in the right hands. SO many able companies laid low by the banks' refusal to lend where cashflow's temporarily poor. (If only they'd been that prudent when selling on sub-prime, unserviceable debt, eh kids?) Good on Jim McColl for his business suss and can-do mentality

A life time ago I worked for a prefab building manufacturer. We won a contract for over 300 houses for Asiatic labour on middle east oil fields. (didnt conform to Oz building regs so we couldnt sell them here) We went to bank and government wonderfull reception ... you can rely on us etc etc the government is right behind you etc etc . We dispatched the first 135 houses to the docks, 3 truck loads left in yard, when we got a telex "Contract Cancelled" no explanation. We prompltly went to the top international lawyer in Brissie he said if you sue you will win but you wont get any money so dont waste your time ... We were bust!!! went to banks and government they just didnt want to know .... Bastards!!! On the slightly brighter side Mrs Oz needed my company station wagon for some reason the day we went bust and I was driving her Veedub so when I arrived at the locked gates the security guards couldnt take it off me as they were doing with the other company cars. Part of the negotiations with the administrators was I kept car as part of monies owed. was a Nice car one like this 4.2 litre straight 6, double barrel carby, went like s***t off a shiny shovel
