So. Never a finer sight than a dear pal of the Rolos from Sydney making his way up our path, on too few occasions this past nearly 30 years (gulp!).. Next week, it's not him, but his 20 year old son, who's backpacking in Europe before returning to University of Sydney in November. He's been following a band he adores, volunteering as a roadie, and just having the time of his life Excellent! Emailed me, uber-polite, the other day saying he'd like to come to Scotland for a week, could I recommend some cheap hostels in Glasgow/Edinburgh. Needless to say, he's getting our spare keys and a bed here for as long as he and his new pal from London want to stay. He and Ms R been in touch (all hail the internet!) since young teens. Here they are long, long before that in Glasgow....and I'll take their pic again next week for comparison Attachments:

I'm sure the Rolo family will pull the stops out to ensure he's many excellent memories of his time in Scotland.

But full marks for his politeness there. What a sweet wee photie!

Bless. The lad'll be taking up residence this week in Ms R's 'den' aka our converted spare room, where his dad and late mum stayed on many a previous visit, before he was born. I don't even mind that he'll have months' worth of laundry. I'm more interested in hearing about his last few months' adventures in Europe

The pic of them as babies was taken 18 years ago at my sister's across the road. She bought two couches from a good shop 20+ years back and when refurbing her living room a couple years ago, they were still in good nick so I purloined one them for the wean's work-in-progress den. Only fitting we've recreated the pic tonight, on that same couch-- albeit the kids are 6 ft and 6ft 3 now Hearing tales of his European adventures and various mishaps along the way. I'm sworn to secrecy on a couple of them, till he gets home and tells his dad. And I know absolutely nothing about the tatt his dad doesn't know about either....eeeek

Great pic! Hope you are all having a real blast. Kid looks very Australian Wean looks great Have fun !!!!! So great to have the boy around...after four months hostelling in Europe he's 'at home' for a bit and getting looked after. Washing machine's been errr...busy too Today was spent wandering round the West End, and up on the Uni campus/Hogwarts. So tall he forgot to duck on the way off the Clockwork Orange and beanie hat got chopped off by the doors, LOL! A trip to buy his first ever pair of Doc Martens (coveted by young Aussies, apparently) so am now ministering with plasters for pain of breaking them in... Followed by his first ever Scottish curry at Ashoka Ashton Lane. That went down well! (Must be genetic, as always first port of call for his dad...) Tomorrow. Purchase of coat, as to my horror, he arrived with only a sweatshirt and a few tees-- and is heading to Eastern Europe for the next fortnight. Come over all mumsy, me. Then a trip to King Tut's. His father, like myself and Mr Rolo, worked with Scottish bands who helped establish, indirectly, our best venue. Tut's founder Stuart Clumpas of DF Concerts now lives in NZ but he and family see the boy and his dad whenever they're in Sydney. And me and chez Rolo when they come to TITP most years. So all very close to home, really. And then, it has to be done; Wur Chip

Bloody marvellous night out at Wur Chip Boy's first taste of haggis--expected something akin to mince, pleasantly surprised Food was great tonight, top form, with a damn decent bottle or two of Spanish merlot and a few Scottish-brewed ales tried and tested. Boy now kitted out in fine fur-hooded coat that'll serve him well in Berlin, Buda and Paris these next couple of weeks. He'll have to wear the new Doc Martens to Abu Dhabi on his stopover cos there's no room in the backpack, lol. Sorry to see him go tomorrow, it's been a joy to have him with us this week. And I was just getting to grips with some new 'Strine'...like "boggans" (boggens?), "Holdens" and "So young!" Ach. Safe home, son.

He was a very lucky lad having you and your family giving him a real welcome. In spite of the excitement when travelling occasionally you can get bloody lonely and its wonderful to find a home so far from home. I'm sure he would appreciate it
Word is "Bogan" very hard to define.... My problem here is not using Strine I drop into it from time to time though I try to keep to standard English and once in a while Lallands

Bogan. Thanks, Oz! Much discussion was had whether it equated most to 'ned' 'lad' or 'chav' but we got the general drift Hard to watch the boy striding out towards the departure gate at Glasgow today in his new docs and coat He's off to Berlin for the weekend 25th anniversary of the wall coming down--street parties, meeting up with other backpacking pals and back to hostelling, albeit with a rucksack full of freshly laundered clothes, LOL, haha!
