Brilliant management of the poor Glasgow nurse who got back from Sierra Leone last night. Within a couple of hours of falling ill, she was in the Brownlee infectious diseases unit at Gartnavel, just a few yards away down Cleveden Hill. Heard a huge heavy plane right overhead about 2am, unusual flightpath and time, but reason clear now as she was taken to London in a forces Hercules overnight apparently. A media feeding frenzy, of course Although the Scots are calm, thoughtful of the woman and her family and colleagues, and not uber-reacting about it, trusting our NHS workers to take utmost care, it's not the same in parts of England where people with IQs in single figures are panicking. What's worse is the outbreak of terrible anti-Scots invective from some quarters, who are furious at having to 'foot the bill' for her treatment. You just couldn't make it up. So ignorant they're unaware of protocol throughout the UK for ebola cases: that all are treated in a single dedicated unit that just happens to be in London. To minimise risk and to ensure containment. DOH! Just judicious planning, common sense! But no, we are being ripped apart in some media outlets because we're seen as 'needing' a bailout by the South. The rank stupidity is breathtaking, it really is.
This nurse spent the last month as part of a team of NHS volunteers working in the worst hit communities, an unselfish dedicated professional who we are all hoping will make a full recovery. Perhaps there's a case for looking at enhanced quarantine measures for those returning from affected areas but first and foremost is containing the one confirmed case and getting her better, shirley.

Remember the AVERAGE IQ is 100.
Most people with an IQ greater than their age will appreciate what and why these things happen the rest will do anything to discomfit anything the guvmint does
According to papers here the authorities at LHR slipped up even after her requesting a check.

the latest comments are that she complained of being unwell at Heathrow but was allowed to continue, perhaps? A slip up? Or hopefully they learn from it? The other one in Aberdeen has proven negative, however excellent that they were checked? There is a lot of comments that it could be like the Spanish flu epidemic around at WW1 times.

Well it had been reported today that she did alert the authorities but was allowed to continue on her way. But reports are not necessarily factual either so best to wait for the facts.
If it turns out that processes need amended, I'm sure they will be.
Ebola and flu are different in that only flu is airborne. You can't *catch* ebola unless you're in close contact with the bodily fluids of a sufferer. The virus, if transferred to surfaces like plane seats, trays etc, dies within seconds so everyone whinging on about the danger of public transport used by sufferers is completely pointless.
As a medic who works at Gartnavel pointed out today, the Brownlee unit houses people with all manner of highly contagious diseases such as Hep A-C, aids etc and nobody but NOBODY, including those who work there, have been infected. People need to get a grip!
