OK,as a gal, I am in the minority on our wee forum and so I'm risking pelters and ridicule for saying this. But I'm saying it anyway.
I am SICK to my stomach that some men believe it's somehow excusable to attack, rape and murder women. I also know that many decent men will agree. But hear me out.
I am SICK of hearing the increasingly prevalent view that women contribute to being attacked. Go out alone and you're *asking for it*. Walk home alone woah, beware, it'll be your fault if you're attacked. REALLY? WTFF?
Get this. The only person responsible for attacking another person is THE ATTACKER.
I am SICK--yes,even at age 59--of fucking well feeling scared that the guy walking behind me or slowing down to *ask directions* is a potential attacker.
I am SICK of worrying that my daughter and everyone else's daughter is considered a potential victim by some fucking perverted, inadequate men.
Are MALE victims of attacks decried, criticised and blamed because of what they're wearing, whether they've been drinking or how many previous sexual encounters they've had?
HELL no. The fuck they aren't.
I despair, I really do, that girls and women are --in a so-called civilised country in the 21st Century--treated as a joke, a piece of meat of no value, an inconsequential being, born only to be considered fair game.
All the while being blamed and chastised because they dare go out and about in the world.

So I'm asking that the next time you hear a mate tell a sexist joke, that's all about banter and fun (apparently), remember your own wife, daughter, sister or friend and pull him up, challenge his view and shame him. Because such contempt is on the spectrum, it's only a matter of degree.
