Just wait a goddamn minute there. Are you saying that anyone who challenges your views in rational and reasonable language is ranting? Hold on havent finished, sorry your language is reasonable as I would expect .. rational is open to question. Emergency summit of EU countries has today resulted in a tripling of the budget for search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Considerable public pressure throughout the EU has shamed the politicians into it. There's a significant shift happening throughout Europe in terms of politics. A huge uprising against austerity that is seeing minority parties come to the fore to challenge the (usually two) major parties in any country. Major awareness going on in the general populaces about cause and effect, and lack of information, pre-internet. Total watershed time in Europe. About bloody time too.

Instead of hiding your collective heads in the sand and pretending it isnt happening. I know UK cannot feed its present population (it has to import 40% of its food) Is EU as a whole capable of feeding itsself or does ot have to rely on on EU countries for a shortfall, From that premise K is full to overflowing

Re the UKE being incapable of feeding its people, I'd question that assumption. I'd maybe say that we could feed our people perfectly well if it were not for trends in importing cheap foods that only benefit the importer. AND another thing!---conglomerate supermarkets have driven out local producers by forcing them to compete with cheaper imports, whether that be meat, veg or grain supplies. That puts local producers out of business and makes us ever more reliant on imports. Do you know, for one example, that seafood producers in Scotland sell prawns to the Far East, that are conveyed in ships for months on end, only to be processed into ready meals that then come back, frozen, in yet more ships to be stocked on supermarket shelves? How fucking crazy is THAT! What happened to just BUYING food in season in your country and just bloody well cooking it? DOH Apparently one's behaving responsibly when squinting over the backs of packets to read what's in your meal,to check for additives, preservatives, sugar/fat content whatever. Aren't we clever?

Ok what I was meaning is that we know UK has to imports more food than it exports about 40% more. Has been that way for yonks (before ww2) More peope only exacerbates the situation. You cant feed yourself without imports !!!! to many people. It costs $$$$ to import food (not that we are complaining) which buggers up your balance of payments and economy. More people more $$$ for food imports. I was wondering if EU as a whole HAS To import food to feed its population.
We check backs of food packets for "produce of........." If not OZ, NZ or US I dont buy it except Scotch and some deluxe European foods like shortbread and kippers.

I think that's the chosen way, and dictated to us by the importers, those who drive out local producers in favour of cheap, mass produced ingredients. Europe is hugely fertile in terms of growing crops such as vegetables and legumes, as well as our wonderful seafood and meats, kippers and shortbread included But we do increasingly contend with HUGE imports from the US, mainly corn products that are used in oils, starches, and all manner of convenience foods. Tinned, frozen, ready meals, you name it. And also sugarcane from the Americas. The drug of addiction in the Western World. It's de rigeur here to add it to bloody EVERYTHING, even BREAD!!! If we all quit the sugar habit, our NHS bill would drop like the proverbial stone.
