So four old Victorian Glasgow hospitals have closed this year and been merged together into the most huge new building over on the Southern General site. Complete with helipad on the roof for the Helimed team who bring in folks from outlying areas in emergencies, total heroes that they are... So my mum's been on the waitlist for a hip replacement; she's had two surgery dates cancelled in the last few months due to demand on hospital services. It's aye like that in the depths of winter, though, and you kind of expect more folks will be sick or have weather related injuries, broken bones from falling on icy pavements etc which puts pressure on the orthopaedic surgery teams of course. Anyway, the good news is she's just had her surgery and on visiting her earlier today I was AMAZED!!! at the new facilities. Every patient has their own huge room complete with floor to ceiling windows, state of the art monitoring, their own free TV mounted on a swivelling arm to suit their position and an ensuite wet-room that'd be the envy of most 5 star hotels. Fantastic staff from the nursing team to the docs, surgeons, anaesthetist and physio teams. This level of care and treatment is one of the priorities II want my tax money spent on. And I'd willingly pay more if it was ring fenced into NHS Scotland, I think many of us would. We absolutely MUST RESIST the UK government's ongoing plan to privatise the NHS and make it only the preserve of those who can afford to pay. Oh yes.

Had to laugh though, it was a busy visiting day today, an awful lot of folks gathering at the lifts--and boy, a very vocal *entitled* few didn't hold back with their complaints and moans about having to wait for the lift.
The type that can't see the big picture, needless to say. One wee chap, aged about 5, with his grandparents who were about 38, couldn't understand why there wasn't a MacDonalds in the concourse.

Ah the curse of having such elderly grandparents, the wee brat must have been mightily embarrassed.

It failed miserably, so the Scottish NHS took it over and due to its state of the art health technology turned it into a centre of excellence, which is free.

Indeed, Nota, I know quite a few folks who've had NHS treatment there and speak of it really highly. Thanks for kind wishes, Oz. I spent the afternoon over there today and again was pretty impressed by the whole shebang. It's kept absolutely spotless which is great after those old Victorian buildings which are so hard to keep hygienic given all the nooks and indeed crannies... She's doing OK, a bit morphined-up as you'd expect, but she managed a wee circuit round the corridors on two sticks, which is good going after only three days. She's certainly in better shape than the Firstbus I took back to my office in central Glasgow. Gear box broke in the middle of the Clyde Tunnel and we hirpled as far as Partick in first gear then we all had to get off

It was originally to be built in Greenock, but the only available space wasn't big enough, the space is now home to RBS Mmortgage Centre and a holiday inn and EE ( t-mobile) call centre.
By Christ I store some pish in ma heid

PS. Good on yer auld maw for going for the hip replacement and all that it entails, fair play to her indeed. Whole new lease of life, Nota, for an otherwise fit and super healthy 87 year old. She could've chosen to not bother and become more and more disabled by it and relied on the help of others ongoing-- but she values her independence. She's quite a gal, my ma. And SO good to have her home for Mother's Day Sunday.
