Education Maintenance Allowance.
The Tory goverment, sorry Coalition, are about to take this allowance away as part of a crackdown on benefits.
It's given to children aged 16 to 18 as assistance to help them remain at school in households where money's tight. They get £40 a week in term time, mostly used for travel and subsistence expenses.
It's means-tested on parental income so at the wean's school there's a big uptake in 4th-6th year.
Is it not better to give the weans some help to stay on and maybe get a few qualis? Or better to throw them out to compete in a jobs market that's not in their favour--meaning they sign on and claim benefits of MORE than £40 a week?
It seems like a shortsighted view to me. But then, we're all in this together, aren't we, David Cameron?

I don't *think* this plan to ditch E.M.A. applies in Scotland. Although that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe for ever, I suppose.
It certainly seems wiser to facilitate access to education instead of dumping them on the streets. Don't parents/guardians continue to get Child Benefit though if the wean stays on at school or similar education after the age of 16? Perhaps not - I'm not sure how it works.

Oh yes! The pandas going to Edinburgh? I can haz friends now! ;D Zoos are a bit dodgy, ethically, though, aren't they? But probably a lot better than they used to be.
So I wonder who the pandas' politician victims will be. You know, like Nixon getting a panda, then out of office, Heath getting a panda then out of office .... Beware the curse of the pandas! ;D

Hopefully Eck and Co won't take this path. Because that would be silly Re Child Benefit, yeah Celyn, if your kid's in full time education up til the age of 19 you still get it. It's about £16 a week and not means-tested. It's Tax Credits stop that at age 16. They are means-tested and the amount awarded's on a sliding scale depending on family income up to £60K a year but who pay out for private childcare. At that level the award's about £10 a week, but much much more for families who earn less. I know many a family that lies about their income and marital status so as to claim the max. I also know people who lie about their childcare costs by claiming they're shelling out £300 + a week when the wean's are looked after by their granny. Shit, innit?

Yes they do that here too but if caught, and a lot are, they have to pay back all monies & are hit with horrendous penalties such as interest & fines. Its cut down a lot , but by no means all, welfare fraud

It's very shit, as I imagine the fact that some, not desperately needing it, tell lies in order to get it, is very useful for those who would end it altogether, never mind the fact that some families will honestly need it.

Celyn, You hit the spot bang on. We give out so much of our taxes to those who definately do not deserve it, and those who SHOULD be helped get a poor deal very often. Our overseas aid also does not get used properly, there should be a huge drive to help with birth control otherwise this wee planet will be awash with humans with all the hell they bring with them like wars, disease and famine.

A lot of govt provided overseas aid isnae exactly meant tae help the peoples of these countries but given as credits tae spend wae british companies - mainly the likes of british aerospace (weppins branch)

Yeah, with you on that, Celyn. The threshold for Tax Credits (at £60K or so) does seem very high to me, I'd imagine most people not living in the South East earning that much are doing quite well and can probably just manage without it. Then again, if you're a single parent and not claiming the married tax allowance you're taxed higher on your income. It's a minefield, this fairness thing.
