www.heraldscotland.com/scottishstoriesGet writing, folks... the Herald wants our stories. "...However, as with the post-war period, the winter of discontent and the age of Thatcherism, we think this will be an era-defining time. It could have a profound effect on everyone in Scotland. You needn’t be an aspiring novelist to take part, however. We are not asking for structured, plotted narratives. Instead we are asking you to provide a short commentary that will illuminate one important moment or aspect of your life, or the life of a friend and relative. We are not looking for fiction: your story must be true. We are not looking for history: your story should relate to an incident that happened within the last three months." Nice idea.

Fair enough I suppose to keep some kind of record of what's going on but since almost everyone's in for it big style, personally I'd prefer a concerted campaign of civil disobedience What will the Herald use these contributed stories for, does anyone know? Will it just be for a matter of public record or will the instances be used to lobby against any particular power? If so, who?

Well, is it so bad for a newspaper just to be looking for just, well, stories? (Fancy that!) I have a book in front of me right now - "The Glasgow Herald, 1783-1983", by Alastair Philips. "Much of the history of this newspaper has been a history about people.... it does not languish in the morass of footling informationin which official histories sometimes become stuck. Rather it glories in the frailties and foibles of the people themselves"... It's wir Herald, and it's looking for our help as it looks to the future. It's waving and not drowning, hopefully. Wave back and gie it a shout.

I had previously sent a link to friends who might be interested, as it is a sort of fun idea, but as to the purpose of it, well, I'm inclined to think it is really to interest people in the "Sunday Herald" so that they'll feel all involved with it and buy it.
Nothing wrong with that: it's quite good thinking. However, I've sort of got settled into being grumpy and suspicious about the "Herald" and the "Scotsman" and it's hard to be positive about them.
Still, it could result quite an interesting archive. I wonder whether copyright resides with the writers or the "Herald".
