Many smiles today. A really great good news story.
This is a story of men. Men are great creatures, sometimes. You can't help but grin like a fool at these stories, and these extraordinary pictures. The best of humanity.
I wonder how e.g. the Taliban in their caves, or the Congolese rapists, feel when contemplating these pictures. It's a shame men at large are such crap creatures, so much of the time.

The drilling boss is a Yank who was pulled back from drilling wells for water in Afghanistan to supervise the drilling. He said its the best thing he has ever done

The best of humanity. Absolutely the best of humanity. Men at their very best; strong, inventive, determined and ultimately capable yet still able to show such obvious emotion. I'd also say the BBC reportage has been extraordinarily brilliant--Matt Frei and Tim Wolcott, both fluent Spanish speakers, brought us an interpretation of events that was really first class, I thought. I feel better about being in the world today somehow. We're so used to the nanny state, about being told how we're all victims ad infinitum, it does my heart good to be reminded just how fucking good, strong and resilient human beings can be.

Yeah & when chips are down most of the world chips in. The drill was Canadian, the cables came from Germany . The checking geolgists were Australians in Perth. Hard rock experts. I was impressed that JJ in the Caribean, Maggs in Glasgow & me in Oz were watching them being brought up at the same time Its a pity that it takes a catastrophe like this to bring the world together. I think the last time was the 2004 tsunami
