And rocks melt with the sun........*
An unequivocable pledge from Alex Salmond today at the SNP conference that Scottish students will continue to have access to education which does not rely on their ability to pay.
"This nation pioneered free education for all, which resulted in Scots inventing and explaining much of the modern world. We called this the Scottish Enlightenment. "And out of educational access came social mobility as we reached all the talents of a nation to change the world for the better - we can do so again." The first minister also said: "Some of our university principals fear that we will fall behind England - we will not.
"We do not intend to withdraw the state from higher education. Any funding gap will be closed. "We would only fail if we were to betray our traditions and mortgage the future.
"So, when it comes to the question of university fees or graduate taxes, I know where I stand.
"The rocks will melt with the sun before I allow tuition fees to be imposed on Scottish students - upfront or backdoor."
* So artfully phrased too, from Robert Burns' My Love is like a Red Red Rose.

I'm not sure what you mean either, Heidie Just wondering if you thought McAskill took the wrong call on freeing Megrahi? Or is it something to do with the policy of not automatically jailing crims for lesser offences? Anyways, good to see you back and hope all's well now

The megrahi thing will out as time goes by,its the systematic disregard of "justice " that he espouses in his policies regarding the sentencing of criminals and the near total lack of them (criminals) having to suffer the consequences of their actions that gets my goat regarding this arsehole of a man!

I agree with you Heidie regards releasing the Libyan though I think history will show he did not do the bombing. I really do think we have to overhaul our sentencing system. I certainly remember edicts being passed by the previous Govt. even the smoking ban. I can't help but think the UK Govt. were happy to hand the problem to the Scots Govt. and they were delighted with the result both ways, one they wanted the bomber out of jail to sook up to oil rich Libya and secondly they could be hypocrites and then say the Scots should not have released him, we would never have released him.

I agree with you Heidie regards releasing the Libyan though I think history will show he did not do the bombing. I really do think we have to overhaul our sentencing system. I agree that we should look at reviewing our sentencing system. For murder and sex assaults in particular. In Scotland we need to show we mean business; take the scum off the streets and keep them off. As it is just now, judges can only sentence within the guidelines that current law allows, and in many ways their hands are tied. When a judge hands down a really severe sentence, the next move is usually for the crim's lawyers to appeal it, leading to yet more money spent on the judicial system. And if the appeal fails, the lawyers look to European law and it all kicks off again. I'd hope Kenny McAskill conducts a serious review when the SNP get their second term in May. It's about time. But one innovation of his I applaud is Cash for Communities, whereby the considerable assets of crims are taken off them and reinvested in the community, in youth projects, mainly sport and the arts.

Yes Rolo, that is a super idea, the giving to a community from ill gotten gain. I think of Willaim Beggs a real monster, he is due out in less than ten years, he has committed more than one murder and is suspected of more, he is a sexual predator of the worst kind and a serious danger to society, so I have to ask W.T.F. is he ever going to be released for? I truly hope the SNP, or if it would be some other group in power, will change the law and keep monsters like him locked up.
