Does it do anything else then, this Kindle you speak of? If not, what's the point of it? Is it supposed to take the place of (coff) real books or whit? Will it not put bookbinders, publishers and retailers out of jobs or will they just get massive royalties instead? Que?

Anyone got Kindle or similar??? More importantly, anyone know a cheap source of 'e books' ? No, not got Kindle, but I definitely have very lustful thoughts in the direction of a Sony Reader or Kindle or similar, so it will be nice to hear from people who do have one, to hear how good/bad they are. Actually, I've had some fun reading e-books on an old Dell Axim, but oh, the consumerist lure of the shiny new toy! ;D Free books? I spent some time wandering around the net looking but really lots of sites, for instance, The Free Library strike me as being essentially a subset of what you could get on Project Gutenberg anyway. Of course, you probably wouldn't dream of using Pirate Bay. Edited to add Well, bummer! I don't think I know how to post links in here. Shit. I hate new "learning experiences". Edited again. Aha. All right now. I wonder what made me so stupid the first time.

Well, I think a lot of E-book readers can play music and stuff too, although the world must be full of little machines that play music. Regarding how it affects the finances of the publishing industry, I think so far e-books are not exactly much cheaper than the real thing, despite the lack of need for actual paper and bookbinders and so on. I don't suppose there can be many people at all who would want it to take the place of real books, but I could see such a thing being really wonderful if stuck on a long train journey or to take lots of reading material with you you if going away for the weekend or on holiday somewhere. Of course real books can't get up and run away from you, whereas Amazon can suddenly swipe books that you have bought, as it did with "1984".

Hello Celyn, glad to make your acquaintance. Yes, I get your point re the travelling book scenario thingy. No bliddy Ryanair excess baggage nonsense to be sure. That's why I asked if the Kindle was multipurpose. Does anybody know how it works which books are made available on these thingies? Is it down to big megadeals with publishers---like they make only the popular titles available? Is it really like an online library or can you only choose what they choose to make available? Re links, Celyn, I know what you mean. Seems it works on shorter links but not longer ones for some reason. No idea really, sorry

some audio books kin be streamed over tinternet, ah put an app tae dae that on ma iphone - its pish
some audio books kin be doonloaded whole - a wee bit better
kindles and ipads let yoo doonload books, that look like real books, so you huv a pikchur on yer wee screen of a book, then you turn ra pages as you read (like pdfs)

Obviously that is a LOT of stuff, but I suppose there will be specialised interests perhaps not well catered for. Here is a comparision chart in ugly colours of various e-book readers.
