He threw a party at the Lorne Hotel for 50 friends (as you do when you're long term unemployed) to celebrate the fact that no drug or corruption charges were to be brought against him. Declared he was going to get steaming drunk. Went back to his Merchant City flat with a male friend and there was an assault. Police and ambulance called. Ambulance creww decided they weren't needed. 'Teflon' Stevie and other guy taken to polis station in the early morning. Purcell released at 7.30 pm. Daily Record photographer was waiting to take a pic as he walked from the station, when a police car drives up and asks Purcell if he'd like a lift. Obviously well in there. www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2012/01/30/scandal-hit-former-glasgow-city-council-leader-steven-purcell-detained-after-assault-at-his-home-86908-23726740/

Messy.
You do wonder though if it'd have made the front page had it been any other domestic.
I feel a bit sorry for Purcell. He's obviously been unstable for some years now. I met him a few times when he was campaign director for the Labour party about 10 years ago. He was quite impressive then, very together, but he got too much power too young IMO.

Where he had his party, is well known as are the owners to S/Clyde Police. he is a very insincere person and only his knowledge of where some skeletons are buried is keeping him out of jail in my opinion. Rather typical of the Mafia that have controlled Glasgow for many years now, again only my opinion.

Strathclyde Police receive funding from Glasgow City Council which is 'discretionary'. In other words, it can be stopped. When it was suggested not so long ago that some of this funding would be withheld to save money, there was an outcry from Pitt Street about it, and warnings that there would have to be redundancies.
It seems to me to be a pretty unhealthy state of affairs that police budgets are subject to the whims of local politicians who might want 'favours' in return for maintaining the level of funding.

I wonder who tipped off the Daily Record that Purcell would be leaving that morning? He hasn't been charged with any crime re the domestic as far as I'm aware. As for Bormes' point about certain members of GCC, it would be patently silly to disagree In fact in the coming months I'll be out campaigning for the SNP candidates in Kelvin ward for the GCC elections come May. ;D More than time to end that particular stranglehold, methinks.
