The Tory minister Andrew Lansley has declared that there needs to be a fiscal divide twixt those living in London and those further north. This would mean a differential in pay for people qualified for the same job, based only on location. The 'reasoning' being that the cost of living in the SE is higher than that in the rest of the country. But is it, really? OK, housing is more expensive in the South East. But other living costs in other parts of the UKE are just the same; fuel, food, utilities, childcare, clothes, household goods etc. Would it not be better to tax London residents slightly less rather than reduce the wages of those who live outside it? People have financial commitments, you can't just go cutting their income by 20% What you would get is people giving up work and going on the dole costing everyone more in the long term. DUH. Unless Andrew Lansley proposes to benefits proportionately as well? And what about other geographical differences such as the high cost of train and air fares for those who live further north than wur esteemed capital? The high cost of fuel in more isolated areas? The higher costs of food due to transportation costs? HUH? This is a horrible horrible ill-thought-out Tory idea. Quelle surprise. Setting ordinary people each other in some pathetic fight over who's got more than who, quid for quid, in the hope no-one notices that they protect their own. We're WELL out of it soon.

How is this news?

London 'weighting' I think is mainly only found in public service jobs. Also another major flaw in Lansley's 'argument' would be if you reduce salaries for comparable jobs north of Watford the tax coffers would dwindle exponentially. He must have gone to Eton or something....
