Man who invented the Chopper! has died. He was 85. Never had one, never really wanted one... but I was an ardent admirer of many, many boys in jeans t-shirts and sneakers who did want and did have one... www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2012/apr/04/raleigh-chopper-bicycle Love the Guardianistas reliving the 70s, in the comments after this piece... "The photo is great above, the complete lack of self consciousness and rag bag clothing and hairstyles are completely at odds with todays crappy reality TV Top man fashions, disgusting id rather look like them kids from 1973 any day,in fact i still do" ;D

"...Bought my wife a Raleigh in 1977 here in the US and found none of the spanners fit. "Oh my god they're still using British Standard Whitworth." "...The plastic the t-shift was made out of for the gear stick broke almost as quickly as the mudguards rusted; leaving a piece of knife-shaped steel at testicle shredding height. If you stopped in a hurry, say trying to lift the incredibly heavy front wheel over a kerb and misjudged by even an inch, you would slide off the banana seat right on to the "nutslicer". Chopper indeed. Thank god we wore our jeans so tight back then, if it was the "let it all hang out" casual sportswear of only a few years later, I doubt I would have children now. Although I do dress to the left and I have always felt that it should be the other way around." ;D
