Yeah, sorry an' that for folks losing their jobs of course, but you know..... I've aye despised these "card and gift" shops that've manufactured a need that never existed. It's a US and UKE thing; nothing like 'em exists in Europe. Birthday cards, fair enough. Just, and no more. Maybe it's just me that doesn't feel any need for cards and totally kack gifts for all other occasions. I'm not a card person. Do I need to purchase a card wishing someone a happy divorce? Good luck for job interview or driving test? Happy new unaffordable mortgage? Sorry You're Leaving...when you're anything but? It was only a matter of time before we got 'Sorry to hear you have cancer' with some godawful platitude inside about keeping your chin up. I need NONE of the above. Write a personal NOTE, ffs, or lift the phone to a person! Who, REALLY, is grateful for some cartoon lighty-up socks with Grandad written on 'em? Or a mug informing you you're the world's best nephew/stepmum/cousin twice removed? What about those deeply sad little epithets, those tiny books praising your love for your cat, dog or hamster? Or the world's philosophers misquoted on a fucking £5 helium balloon? Candles in the shape of a pair of boobs, anyone? "Comedy" towels made to look like kilts? Crap dressy-up costumes made of flimsy inflammable bits of crepe paper? I won't be mourning Clintons' demise. Will you? ;D

I must admit to buying "painted by mouth" Christmas cards coz I think the disabled artists are trying to make a go of it and they deserve a chance.
If any Grand-kid sends me a card with the word "grand........ whatever" on it they will be promptly disinherited.. Gees Im too young to be a father let alone a grandfather. As for birthday cards Im trying to forget them!!!!!!
The rest "Fools and their money etc"
BTW How did the fools get their money in the first place??

Yeah, good riddance to Clintons. Absolutely symptomatic of the horrendous dumbing down of society, that this ridiculous, worthless concept could ever have gotten so big. I hated it with a passion.
We're westenders. If we really need a card, we get our cards from those nice folk at Barratts, thank you very very much...
Mind you, veggie though I am, I don't like the concept of Holland & Barrett much... last thing we need is feeding the folk more bliddy woowoo.

Of course people can't really send notes in cards anymore. They aren't taught how to write.

Holland and Barrett taking over the former Oddbins for SHAME. I'm deeply suspicious of all things supplement. Not only are they overpriced, they're uneccessary. You can get everything you need from your diet--and a helluva lot cheaper. These things can cause all sorts of bother, as in vitamin and mineral overdoses that do more harm than good. If you're ill and need a boost fair dos. But easily got via scrip from the GP. I suppose we'll get to wondering what retail 'outlet' will take over the former Clintons next door. Any bets?

I suppose we'll get to wondering what retail 'outlet' will take over the former Clintons next door. Any bets? I was thinking about this. What do we need? Actually, these days, Byres isn't looking to shabby... ok there are a fair amount of empty shop nonsense...(and thank feck the poofy men's pants shop didn't last!!!) but we do now actually have a cheese shop, a fishmonger, a butcher, a florist, a greengrocer, a very good newsagent, a deli, and the Uni Cafe plods on.... The most thoroughly obnoxiously pointless & undesirable things I can remember on Byres Road (ie Clintons and the poofy pants shop) are gone. The old, traditional businesses are weathering the storm (McIlvanneys the opticians has been there as long as I've been in the west end, still original signage ;D ) And sensible traditional shops have moved back in. We've got it all. How good is that? (now, if we could just get rid of the barbarian hordes of ghastly non-westenders who flood in every weekend....)

What do we need? Well, a bookshop would be dandy ;D
No more restaurants or cafes, our choice is already resplendent!

... It was only a matter of time before we got 'Sorry to hear you have cancer' with some godawful platitude inside about keeping your chin up. Such cards exist: my mother, being treated for breast cancer, received a horrible card with some kind of dismal picture on it and the words "God cares for you". Not that I blame Clintons for that one - no idea where that came from.

Woah! But yet, people do mean well in the main, don't we-------and the likes of these 'card and gift shops' are only too ready to exploit that. It's just the pure mawkish, insincere stuff I can't abide. Oh, and the comedy musical socks... Chez Rolo, we have this great feisty aunt who buys blank cards then writes a message of her own inside. Females get flowery ones, males get boats or racing cars, no matter what the occasion. But if you're REALLY in favour, she sends you an email. She's coming up 85. She also recycles all her Christmas cards and cuts bits of them out with pinking shears (yes! pinking shears!) to make gift tags for the following year. That, I like. ;D I won't miss Clintons.

A couple more Byres Road recession victims this week... Gone is the lovely independent flower shop next to Oxfam music shop. So that's no florists left apart from Moslem's pitch outside FOPP. I spoke to him on the way up the road, he's toiling too but has really decent Easter pots and bunches, at a third of the price of Waitrose and M&S. As I went on my way I was REALLY taken aback to see 'Closing Down' notices in the window of Heart Buchanan (deli and coffee shop, also outside catering). It was a wee bit more expensive but for a treat, the quality was unparalleled in the WE. I was in only the other day, really good coffee £2.25, cheaper and better than many of the alternatives on Byres. Bliddy bliddy Star*ucks. They do free wifi so it's 'hoaching' every day and evening, DAMMIT. I feel for these independent traders and their staff who've lost their livelihood this week.
