You guys have got to read "The Reavers" by George MacDonald Fraser.
The hero is ex Glasgow Academy and has the most fantastic Kelvinsaide accent. Its set in the late 16th century in the borders. The hero's horse is called Garscadden. Its about a fiendish Spanish plot to kidnap James VI called Operation Jim Snatch.
It had me chuckling in a doctors waiting room
