Was watching the Vikings on TV. Looks like a better than average series Apparently its supposed to be about the life of some famous Viking King.
Up to episode 3 here Didnt recognise any of the usual actors.
Scenes inside the hall reminded me of a Glasgow pub
I wonder if they will visit Largs

Funnily enough I learned about the Battle of Largs at School, Our history master was a Scot and an athiest.
He taught it as an exampe of how history is twisted . He said we had to make up our own minds.
BATTLE OF LARGS
Scottish version. The Norse King was trying to take over Largs (fancied an Icecream at Nardinis ) and landed there with his army. He was attacked and defeated by the Scottish army under Alexander IV I think it was 4
Norwegian version The norse fleet were in Lamlash Bay when a storm blew up. One Longship with about 30 aboard was blown across the Firth and ran ashore at Largs where they were attacked by the Local Tartan Army. The Norse sent across another 2 ships to aid the first. one ship landed and its crew helped the first crew hold off the Scots while the third boat towed off the grounbded vessel. On achieving that the Vikings pissed off back to Lamlash.
Conclusion You pays your money and you takes your choice. The Scots had no written record but the Norse had. But is this recoerd true or are just covering up a defeat??
Make up your own minds.

Probably a wee bit of both, probably did attack them when they did arrive by accident, however in those times a member of a Clan caught in the wrong place at the wrong time was as likely to be set upon and ransomed or killed by a Clan that was not friendly to them. Cattle rustling was a great part of the Clan system too, it still is !!!!

Bormes If you can get hold of the book you may enjoy THE REAVERS by George MacDonld Fraser (The Flashman man).
Its a book about the Borders in Elizabethan times but I warn you its not PC and cannot be regarded as a factual account. Its based on a fiendish plot to kidnap James VI (code name operation Jimsnatch)
It had me chuckling from page 1

Whatever the true version, they wouldn't have managed to get along Largs MAin St anyways, it's full of badly parked cars, folk on electric scooters, tour buses drappin aff womens' guild groups. buses on day tripe frae granny farms and general detritus associated wae Scotland's answer tae Eastbourne The Vikings would no doubt have turned around and fekked aff after being confronted by that throng of beige claes, bowling club blazers and chants of " See in ma day........",

lol I used to love Largs. Used to go down there after work quite often in summer when I lived in Giffnock. Used to have a beer in the Brisbane Arms... How could a Queensland guy not go there!!! Also went to dinner dances at the Moorings? ? hotel on the front. From hazy memory to South of town centre across the road from a park that fronted onto the sea. Was the thing to do for up and coming young go-getters PS the mind boggles with the thought of a bunch of hairy vikings being chased down the road by a bunch of beige clad overweight ladies with permed hair and bowling hats waving their handbags

I've always had a soft spot for Largs, as its only 5 mins or so down the road, we go quite regularly for tea in Tony Macaronis ( part of Nardinis)
