Goodnight, little Poppy. At barely eight weeks old, this wee kitten, abandoned by her mother, was rescued by a vet nurse friend who nurtured her till she could find a permanent home for her. Which was ours. Tiny Poppy arrived, in a makeshift box, at our home on Ms R’s 5th birthday. They’ve been inseparable since. A few weeks ago, at nearly 16, Poppy started to show signs of distress and was subsequently diagnosed with lymphoma of the kidney. Her quality of life diminished in front of our eyes, she became so weak and disabled by her illness, and today with huge grief, we took the call to lay her to rest. Ms R would like us to scatter her ashes in our wee postage-stamp garden where she played so happily for 15+ years. I suppose grief's the price we pay for love.

Very sad Rolo, hope your daughter is doing well. Pets become part of the family and the loss of them is very difficult. No matter what a shit day we have had coming in the house and a welcoming wagging tail from pooch or a stretching meow from a wee cat cheers you up no end!!

It was pretty awful waking up today to realise Poppy wasn't here. And pretty shit coming home tonight, not seeing her in her usual position in the front window, waiting for us. Colleagues today asked if I'd be getting the distraught Ms R another wee kitten by way of comfort. Right now my instinct's SO not. Maybe that'll change over time, what do you guys think? Good or bad idea? Sooner, later or not at all?

I would wait, take time you can not replace a pet quickly as it might cause you to have comparisons. With a wee bit of time it becomes easier, good luck whatever you do.

Indeed give it some time Our auld lab is 13 and on his last legs, if he sees xmas he'll be doing well We've decided that, after he's gone to wait 6 months before deciding on having another dug ( well we say that now quite easily but as soon as Mrs N sees a puppy..............)

Yeah, that's my instinct too, Bormes and Nota. Sorry to hear about your pet, Nota. I've donated Poppy's cat box to the vet's to be given to anyone who might be able to use it. I also have a few unopened boxes of catfood and a litter tray that I'd like to donate, but not sure where to. I'm wondering if the PDSA in Shamrock St might take such items, hopefully of some value to someone. Does anyone happen to know? Or have any other suggestions?

Do you not have a local cat rescue or a pet rescue group?
