Mr Rolo's birthday.
Now I don't know about you guys but in these straitened times, we sure don't eat out as often as we used to: formerly a couple of times a month, but now tends to be just special occasions.
So we'd fired onto 5pm.co.uk for to research any good dinner deals on offer in the WE tonight---but only found bog-standard offerings from less than great restaurants, averaging £13 a head for two courses off a highly restricted set menu plus a mean-sized glass of some godawful cheap plonk thrown in.
So, throwing fiscal caution to the wind, off we trooped to wur Chip Brasserie. And guess what, easily the best dinner we've all had this year; great varied menu with loads of specials on offer, seriously good quality wine, and informal yet excellent service. Can-do mentality.
Amazingly good sharing platters to start, then venison pie, salmon, hake, pork & rabbit sausage and roast pork shoulder, all sourced in Scotland and cooked to perfection.
Couple of bottles of good, rich Spanish tempranillo, a cheese board to share, fantastic dark chocolate desserts for the weans and a couple of decent lattes.
Plus fantastic atmosphere tonight as the rain drummed down on the glass roof, and the candles flickered in response. Staff kindly offered to phone cabs for customers rather than have us wait in stormy conditions at the rank nearby.
At just over £20 a head, truly brilliant value. Worth every single penny.
And that'll be why Wur Chip is still in business 42 years on.
