What an appalling tragedy is unfolding in Glasgow today. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-27541883It appears everyone in the building's been accounted for, as the fire crews were there within five minutes. There's a sense of genuine shock, and not just in the creative community, from people in all walks of life. A friend works in the CCA on the next block, which was evacuated, and said that people were standing in the nearby streets crying. Ordinary people going about their business at lunchtime stopped to comfort young students. Another friend who's a lecturer in the new Reid building right across the way took a horrific picture of flames breaching the West side of the building. When I saw that on Twitter I thought 'Oh no, please not the Library'-one of the single most stunning places I've ever visited; utterly beautiful in every detail. But Ranald McInnes of this parish, a high heidyin at Historic Scotland, has been quoted as sayin that it's been irreparably damaged. Alistair Hay, Fire Chief, just said on the radio that some precious items have been salvaged but details are thin on the ground just now, understandably. I really feel for the final year students who'd been preparing their work for the annual degree show but just thankful that nobody has been hurt or worse. I'm hoping against hope that this is all not as dark as it feels tonight and that we've not lost our beloved Mack.

Those interiors are just beautiful, aren't they? Made me greet a little, have to say, as it was confirmed today that the Mack library is gone. Fire chief's said that approx 90% of the building is still viable and 70% of the contents have been salvaged. Which is of course *relatively* good news and there's an outpouring of thanks to Strathclyde West fire teams on social networking today again. <Just a wee pee ess to my post last night: Mr Rolo had a terrible few minutes of utter panic when he heard on the car radio the Art School was on fire. He's contracted by GSA to provide audio to the student union in the new Reid building, did the equipment instal and works as sound engineer several nights a week. So he naturally panicked that something had been left *switched on* in error...poor soul. He and the Union team have been busy overnight rescheduling this weekend's events into nearby venues as the Renfrew St campus remains closed for the foreseeable. > Attachments:

In response to people worldwide wanting to offer practical help with the restoration of the Mackintosh Building, a fund has been set up here: bit.ly/1hljRAf
