Bejasus....learning some real lessons here chez Rolo re just how hard it is for new grads to get a job. Any job. Ms R's applied for so many this past couple months. I just DO NOT GET why some employers can't have the sheer courtesy to reply to everyone who's applied. It's like if you don't hear from us, assume you are unsuccessful. Worse, to be honest, is this. Ms R prepared for a recent interview: she'd done her research on the company, considered her presentation, turned up on time, took care over her appearance and all that... TEN DAYS later, after an interview that lasted over an hour, she's not had the courtesy of a response. Not even a cursory thanks but no thanks. I mean, how hard IS it to write an email, never mind a formal letter! Anyway, just as I was saying to her you'd not want to work for a company that's so disrespectful..her phone went. Twas the TV company she'd worked for last month, offering her more work next week. So that's all good. But I am TOTALLY SICKENED by the way our young people are being treated by less than scrupulous employers. They can stuff their minimum wage of what, £5 an hour, up their fat backsides.

some mannerless bastards around but would you like to work for a firm that treats people like that?
We had a standard letter for "first job" unsuccessful applicants which ended
"..... We were most impressed by the standard of applicants and very much regret that we had only one position available."
No point in being harsh not getting job is bad enough so give them a little encouragement.
I have always found that if you treat staff well they respond well (well most of them, some are real bastards but they never lasted long.)

Totally agree, Oz. Needless to say, still no response from the company that interviewed Ms R. I think that's bloody appalling. When we are recruiting, we write within one week to everyone who's not been shortlisted for interview. And advise those we've interviewed they can expect to hear from us within 48 hours. I really feel for young people who encounter such disrespectful behaviour. Just because it appears to be the norm, that doesn't make it acceptable. Anyway, on to the next application.... She's surviving OK with a wee bit of TV gopher work and some modelling stuff for now.

When we advertised for newly qualified people. we preferred those who studied in the sandwich course rather than full time students. We found the full time students needed at least another few months intensive training before we could let them loose on a site.
We found the full timers had almost identical letters of application, particularly the Asians, obviously attended same seminars on how to impress bosses and get jobs.
We got one application from a Chinese guy who broke the mold his letter grabbed my partner's attention so we interviewed him out of curiosity. We asked the standard question "what is your practical experience?" His answer "None but Im a fast learner my degree proves that". He got the job.
He turned out to be one hell of a guy extremely competent and ended up as one of my patrtners waht a outfit 3 partners me a Kiwi lady and a Chinese guy.
His best one liner "you know I cant tell you bloody round-eyes apart!!!"
PS keep CVs short the average boss has the attention span slightly in excess of that of a goldfish so anyting over a page and a half loses them . We are not really interested in that one of the applicants skills is opening a microwave oven door a split second before it beeps!

Yep, seen a few crap CVs in my time too.
Specially the four/five/six pagers from people who've been wrongly directed to put in everything PLUS the tat sink.
Two pages of a4 max. Covering letter should address the skills requested (essential and desirable) in the order addressed by the job spec.
Meandering cover letters that make me do all the work get binned. Short and to the point is all.
So many kids getting shite advice re how to write a CV. Some companies are even taking their money to advise em. Such crap.

Years ago before fax and web we advertised in Scotland, we were desperate for staff & my old boss would do the interviewing.
One if the first replies was from head hunter in Edinburgh signed by an Aaron, Justin or a Crispin or some other wanker name containing more bullshit than Smithfield.
His services would cost us our first born.
I regret I had a brain snap, sometimes it happens, sent him a telex
"Please do not waste my time abusive letter following"
He never responded.
Bet all his theories about uncouth colonials were confirmed

OK despite Company A still not having the balls to write to unsuccessful interviewees, Ms R is undeterred. That's ma girl! A couple more days last weekend on the TV thing over at Pacific Quay---- a living wage plus three meals a day, she's enjoyed that job, and knows it's both temporary and beginner level. You gotta start somewhere....and it could lead precisely nowhere, lets not kid ourselves... So not taking anything for granted, she's been putting in the legwork delivering her CV to NON G1 businesses in the West End for the best part of a month. And guess what........I think you might like this, Bormes Of course I'll not name the business that offered her a job this week but suffice to say,.she's VERY much *at home* on those premises! She was telling her new colleagues tonight all her memories of the place since she was tiny wee; the half-pizza pie, the booths where she found her feet as a toddler to check out the *muriel* and for some reason , the day she was out playing at back of the new conservatory, aged about 4 and found a fiver in the grass. She took it to Ghis, who told her to keep it, for her honesty in handing it in. I'm a wee bit greety tonight--but in a good way.

I was quite impressed by pic Sir Hank put on of the window where my desk was at 219 St Vincent Street (first job in Glasgow)

Which building was that, Oz? I mean, where on St Vincent compared to Buchanan St, say?
Fabulous new bar's just opened in the old Anchor Line building, using all the original deco features but its down near Geo Square.
Suspect 219's on other side of road and up the hill a wee bit?

BTW, Bormes, Ms R's settled in really well at VW...loves working there, says the management is chalk and cheese compared to across the way....better wage plus staff are treated like human beings not machines. Get to keep their tips and everything!!!! Oh and proper breaks. She's done her trial week and is getting 3/4 shifts a week now. Of course you couldn't survive on that if living away from home but she's happy just working and having enough to get by on. Last weekend there were more protests down Ashton re G1 working conditions. This to highlight that they're being taking on by the STUC re not paying minimum wage, making staff pay for uniforms and retaining staff tips. I was cheering them on, needless to say!

Yes there are still good firms around with nice people running them . It breeds a happy staff and loyalty. glad the YL likes it
I could never afford to pay absolute top $$ so we tried to make conditions as pleasant as possible. It paid off with a loyal staff. They knew if they wanted time off they didnt have to make up a recently defunct granny.

That building's just across the road diagonally from King Tuts and DF Concerts office. I'm there often so will take a pic next time! Danny Browns I faintly recall, very popular place at the time. It's now Failte, an Irish themed bar, that I pass every day on my way up the road from Merchant City. You'll be glad to know that some establishments you'll remember are still in situ, Oz. ROGANO! I go once a year, every year, in the run up to Christmas, with old pals. Quelle surprise, you can sit outside now even in winter. Why you'd want to with that stunning deco interior I don't know, patio heaters or no.
