That is basically what I experience whenever I get a flight, whether in Europe or in the US. Walking through a scanner then a pat down. I always have all my little four ounce bottles in a one quart plastic bag handily tucked in the outter pocket of my carry on.
I'm not okay with the xray they are instituting. Although you can opt for a pat down. I think both are unnecessary.

Had to go to a small country town a week or so ago (couldnt think of an excuse fast enough though Keng did say I seemed to have rather a lot of dead grannies). On way there , produce photo ID ( driving Licence), scanner and nasty looks. On way back scanner which I noticed wasn't plugged in. Wont mention Airport.
BTW hire car keys were dropped in a box at desk coz no-one was there. Typical!!!

Hands up who thinks security checks on people passing through at UKE airports could be simplified? Are there really random nutters set to blow every flight apart? How come you don't have to take the same precautions when going by train? Anyone? The only place I've had baggage screened when going on a train was in Seville. And that was a few years back just after the Madrid train bombing. It's hysteria of the worst order just now. IMHO

Would profiling not be the best idea for passengers who have had a ticket for a few days and searching others based also on profile if they bought their ticket late? If the bombers are Islamic, why not target Islamic people?

Would profiling not be the best idea for passengers who have had a ticket for a few days and searching others based also on profile if they bought their ticket late? If the bombers are Islamic, why not target Islamic people? Well because it wouldn't have stopped the Lockerbie bomb for one thing, Bormes. That was unaccompanied baggage, we're led to believe.... As was the latest cargo- type transit. AFAIK the only two 'detected' suicide bombers were the shoe bomber and the pants bomber, both of whom were foiled before damage was done. The point is millions of people are being inconvenienced because of one or two nutters, well there are nutters everywhere and to concentrate our resources on the 99.999999% of non-nutter air travellers is naive in the extreme. What I don't get about all this is the sheer inconsistency when it comes to security. For example, I fly fairly frequently to North Eastern Spain and on booking online I have to submit the passport details of the party WELL upfront of departure, yet on flying to other European countries, France, Germany, Holland, Italy-- this is not mandatory. There's big money in keeping us all terrified, make no mistake about it.

Yes, and it goes to prove that any security measures we put in (expensively) will not deter these few-and-far-between nutjobs.
When flying we're a hostage to fortune pretty much; to extreme weather conditions, to human error and to mechanical and design failure. And yet it remains the safest mode of transport we have.
How many flights have come down due to the latter causes rather than to terrorist activity?

Very true Rolo, good points, however I feel you are in line with what I have been suggesting, ie., profiling, why should most of us be put thro' all the nonsense the Air lines want. I would say your sending info. to Spain IS a discreet form of profiling, and that is the way they will have to go as things get worse. The authorities have the information on all of us if they need it, so it should be the best way forward. Unfortunately I think it is" when" the next attack is not" if" there will be one. Your final point is also very valid, the politicians do play on people's fears however I must say our folks tend to say, " F*ck them I'm going my holidays anyway !!
