Agree Nota - sort of rabid WASPS with virtually no intelligence or sense. I have to agree, much as it pains me. Sure, there aren't enough good smart women in politics in the US or the UK IMHO--but believing that the ranting, botoxed pretty-pretty privileged Stepford Wives that are Palin and O'Donnell are somehow the answer is pretty misguided. Well meaning and downhome wholesome they may be but they're political ingenues and wouldn't last a second in positions of real power. When faced with tough decisions in government they'd make the exact same mistakes from the inside as every other crusading politician does. That they appear to be gaining ground is scary. And as a woman I'm appalled at their lack of nous and intelligence, frankly.

O'Donnell took a fairly substantial loss in her attempt. I'm not sure that Palin has a chance because Karl Rove has said he doesn't favor her as a candidate. I don't think a Tea Party candidate could win a presidential election.

Are there any great women in politics over there, Peony? Apart from Hillary that is Probably there are, and they're just getting on with business, largely ignored by the media . We don't have too many of them in Scotland, to be honest. Nicola Sturgeon the SNP deputy leader is, IMHO, very good, she's a clever girl who gets things done, she's a good communicator and I believe she's connected to the real world. Don't know about the US but the issue here for women pollies is that it's difficult to have a lasting political career if you also have family commitments, although the Scottish Parliament I"m glad to report restricts late hours (--- unlike Westminster) in the hopes of some kind of work-life balance (cringes at the buzzword there, sorry!)...

Our Prime Minister is a woman and a living endorsement for keeping women in the tat bare foot & pregnant
On the other hand our local MP (Bronwyn Bishop) is also a woman and exceptionally good pollie
Wonder if the fact one is Labour & the other is Liberal has anything to do with it.

There are some very good women in politics. Patty Murray, Barbara Boxer, Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Houston elected a female mayor who is openly gay. Not too shabby for Texas, the land of the insane bible worshippers.
Really, to be honest, I think that an honest and trustworthy politician is a gem, be they female or male.
The myth that women can have it all and be it all, is just that: a myth. The hours are long for politicians, the dangers many, but the pay must be good.
Texas, many years ago, had a senator called Sam Rayburn. He died with not much money, but he was dead honest. Lobbyists left him alone because when they approached him, he would say in his sweet Texas drawl, "Sorry, I'm not for sale." Too bad we don't have more like him. Texas used to have a great female governor: Anne Richards.

Obama has failed miserably in one sense: he hasn't communicated much with his constituency. How the hell is a man of his intelligence supposed to govern a country where, e.g., facts are seen as the work of the devil?? It'd be pearls before swine. The tea party is taking off over there because it's made up of quite scarily ignorant folk - and just-about-barefaced racists. They'll go far. I kinda knew this would happen. Obama's chance should have come after Clinton, not after the Bush fuckwit who has made such a mess and who has so polarised everything. Gor blimey missus - do you think anything would work right under the tea party folks?? Do you see anything getting better in the US or in the world with (god forbid) the tea party at the helm?? Them folks are the end of the world as we know it. They're insane.

Hey, I'm not a supporter of the Tea party. I just said I understand why some find it appealing. We have fallen on hard times.
I was one of the huge crowd who voted for Obama and now wonder why the hell he was called the great communicator. He himself has said that he should have been talking to the masses and not assuming that they knew where he was going.
He was elected by thousands of people, Westie. Not everyone thinks that facts are from the devil.
