One shouldn't anthropomorphise, and all that, but this just strikes me as awfy sad. Brave wee Spirit rover, dead and abandoned on Mars...? news.sciencemag.org/scienceinsider/2010/11/scientist-spirit-mars-rover-may.html" ...The rover, trapped in the sands of an alien planet, its solar cells slowly depleting, far from any possible help. Waiting for the instructions that it hopes will liberate it; but the instructions fail, and they come ever less often now. The sun rises a bit less every day, and the shadows are ever longer..."

This could not have been written by a science writer, surely. I'm sure no robot hopes for instructions.
We did manage to do some good things, with lots of help, in the space program. Too bad it's been gutted.

Awww, tigger, that's so sad. Poor wee thing. Like a lost puppy. No dinner, no bones, no biscuits, no sticks* to chase. No pats on the head. No Rover's Return. Greet greet, boo hoo. *Re. sticks, the last dog I had much to do with tended to regard young trees as sticks. A bit too enthusiastically on occasion. "No, Jamie, that is not a stick. That is a sapling and it is meant to stay there and grow and it is not a stick. Ah. Um. Well, maybe it is a stick then."
