The X5 has a 90 litre tank, with diesel at @£1.42 a litre that means a full tank costs £127 But we easily average 30MPG To tell you the truth we never really count the cst of fuel as its a necessity for us, using public transport is just lunacy for us. I'm confused with this litre/gallon obfuscation! Nota, how far can you drive with a full tank of whatever it is that costs £127? That depends on driving style - I'm a bit heavy right footed but we can get around 500+ miles for that more if you dont accelerate hard

Yes Rolo, it is a deliberate obfuscation on behalf of the petrol companies and the govt. iIn the past when petrol or diesel, which was cheaper and is cheaper to make, yet now is dearer than petrol, if it went up more than 3 p a gall. There was uproar, now though they put it up 5p per litre which is 22.5p per gallon!! Outrageous. Most of the money is of course tax to the govt, so in a way when they try so hard to make us all go on public transport with all it's problems, they will in fact reach a point, partially happening already, where the revenue will become a real problem for them as people not driving means LESS tax for them, so they need a fairer balance. There isn't enough capacity in UK to refine enough diesel - supply n demand. nio one wants to increase refining capacity for diesel when it will reduce teh price

Seems mental, doesn't it. Economy of scale, I guess. But public transport's SO crap outwith urban areas, of course folks have to rely on their cars. But add in loan repayments, insurance and maintenance costs and it's like anyone outwith cities pays such a heavy price. Here in the snowy wastes of Kelvinside it never ceases to amuse me the amount of 4 x4s that are mainly used to ferry kids to school about 200 yards away and take the yummy mummies to their local coffee mornings. Nothing to do with 'need', and all to do with showing off conspicuous consumption. Diddies. The squeezed middle classes and their highly entitled 'necessities'. Bah, bah and thrice BAH.

The family owns a Nissan Patrol Diesel with tankage for 135 litres ,2 tanks, takes us a fair distance I know I took it from here to Brisbane without refueling . We calculate on 1,000km on sealed roads and about half that on unsealed roads,
I have a Subaru Forester not coz I need a 4wd but because Mrs Oz has a bad back & finds it difficult to get into a normal sedan

Best car for driving in city centres is an automatic large 4x4 You can see all around you and no fekker in a black cab cuts you up

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Nah, I'm not really with you there, Nota. These big fekkers take up too much room on urban roads, and usually only one occupant- grrrrrrrrrr.

Most of them actually don't take up any more space than a large saloon X5 is actually smaller size than BMW 5 series estate car, or an Audi A6 estate It's only because they are tall that it looks big. Another example is the land rover freelander2 it's actually based on a ford focus

Most of them arent much use off the road even if the drivers knew how to drive them properly (present company excluded). Most have too low rubbish and dangly bits hanging down underneath

I can't understand why folk fit sidesteps that stick down the way hence reducing ground rubbish Personally I would love a Mercedes G-wagon, but alas the @£90,000 price tag means its beyond ma reach, we'll until the lottery win happens. They are hand built with a 100% quality record and are luxurious whilst being totally utilitarian too

here is our 4wd crossing a sand dune on the "French Line" road in the North of South Australia The fluro flag on top of the radio arial is so that a vehicle on the other side of a dune can see us coming. Most 4wds there have them. The snorkel with air cleaner on top is to try and raise the air intake as far as possible above dust Thats a hi-lift jack strapped on spare is for lifting out when stuck in sand so far apart from punctures we havent had to use it

Uncanny, Oz, that looks JUST like the WE where them type of veee-hicles are in such demand... It's a sair fecht getting to the shops 100 yards away without wan.... One wouldn't want to break an expensively manicured nail carrying the shopping home, would one? And walking on the pavement's just so, well.........common, dahling.
