on same subject, god knows where I read it, An American couple's son was on the plane. When told his effects were available for collection they went to New York to pick them up . At the desk they were handed a ticket and told to go to so & so where they were handed a box, no words of sympathy nothing. A year or so later they went to Lockerbie to try and see where he had been found. They started at the cop shop or town hall I cant remember which. They told reception that they were Mr & mrs X and that their son had been on the Pan Am flight. The receptions got someone more senior to see them. His first words were "you will be < sons Christian name> parents. They were astonished . The guy then got a map & showed them where he had been found and arranged for a car and a driver to take them there. They said it gave them great comfort to know that people in a small country town in a foreign land cared. I have no idea where I read this but it stuck in my mind. Apparently this caring attitude to victims families in Lockerbie is par for the course. Especially once the media furore died down and the locals could get themselves out of the spotlight, rebuild and look to the future somewhat.
