And someday I'm gonna do that, Rolo. Right now I'm fighting visions of the missing Malaysian flight for space in my rational mind. Do that Peony they are a warm hospitable people. We have 2 seasons here too summer bout September to may winter (like a Scottish summer) June to August. Further North we have 2 seasons the Wet when it rains sometimes October to May and the Dry when it doesnt for the remainder of the year. Think how many flights have taken off and landed since the Malayan Airliner went missing it helps to put it into perpective. My grandaughter (gees Im getting old) or her boy friend flies from Coolangatta to Sydney every second weekend air fare $39. Funnily enough its cheaper flying from Sydney by Virgin and from Coolangatta by Jetstar... must be logic there somewhere

Bit of advice Peony which I got from the daughter of a friend of mine from Kansas. She found that if you tell everyone you are from Canada and you will get things 10-15% cheaper

I'm very edgy about flying this year as compared to last.

You got there safely, I assume, Peony? According to "flightradar" BAW 196 arrived at LHR 10 minutes early.

Hope Peony gets back in touch soon? I did hear some mad rumour up onsite at T that now we have to have switchy-on capability on all laptops, ipads etc in order to be allowed to fly on a plane we've bought a ticket for, is this TRUE??? Is this *Intelligence* talking (as in information of potential threat) or just more bloody scaremongering for political reasons? EH? I for one am bloody sick of this uber-security meltdown. And it's SO inconsistent, viz: about a month ago coming in from Barcelona I went through rigorous security no problem, then a week later in Zurich, I was asked to take off the very same pair of sandals I was wearing through Barca so they could be put through the scanner separately. Now, said sandals are basically a bit of very flat leather, no heels, no soles to speak of and a wee thong of leather on top. So, tell me this...how come they're a security risk in Zurich and not in Barca? Anyone? That mad shoe-bomber has a lot to answer for and I for one would slap him about the face with a sandal anyday.GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Its true! quite sensible when you think about it. The explosive would have to be in battery or drive cavity. If item switches on Ergo no explosives.
Once I had to go through a metal detector at a regional airport. On going through I realised it wasnt plugged in!!!! I asked the guy why not and he said it kept blowing airport fuses but it looked good so why not use it besides it kept "the bosses" happy.

So can ANYONE explain why my pathetic little sandals were deemed a security risk in Switzerland and not Spain? NO, I THOUGHT NOT! It's fecking bonkers. Let's look at it in proportion. Of thousands of flights daily we all go through this MENTAL regime of inconsistent security. Yet those who'd bomb us to feck are quite able to access other forms of public transport like trains, buses without this complete nonsense...what, are we going to scan everyone getting on a bus or train next? Airport security is totally out of all proportion. It plays on our fears of unnatural being up in the air sh*t when in actual fact the vast majority of terrorist bombs are set on terra firma. If someone wants really badly to bomb a plane, they'll do it and no security measures are gonna stop it. We are where we are and I point blank refuse to live my life in fear. In terms of risk we're all more likely to die from stepping out our front door every day than being victim of some mad bstrd terrorist. They WANT us to be scared. Fuck that, I say.

... Once I had to go through a metal detector at a regional airport. On going through I realised it wasnt plugged in!!!! I asked the guy why not and he said it kept blowing airport fuses but it looked good so why not use it besides it kept "the bosses" happy. Once upon a time on a school trip, trying to board plane at Zürich, the metal detector thingwie really took against this particular girl in our group. Eventually, they decided it might be freaking out about the metallic wrapper on a large Toblerone bar, and said just to go through anyway. So, happy result, except that it really is not possible that she was the only person ever to take chocolate home from Switzerland, is it? So the stupid thing was basically not working well enough (and I suppose they probably reasoned that this bunch of Scottish schoolkids and teachers might not be the most likely terrorist threat). You'd have thought the technology would have improved by now, but it seems not. Edited to add: the airport also had blokes with guns and a bloody TANK. Wow. It might have made perfect sense and probably did, but it was a bit freaky, as it was the first time I had seen such things.

At Sydney airport at arrivals you aare most likely to be greeted with People in yellow jackets Tourist volunteers who are there to help bewildered tourists. On arrival here the plane is sprayed for bugs, A Pom was assured by the Ozzie guy in the adjoining seat they only did this in flights from UK

First thing, There are explosives out there that are very easily made to look like a totally innocent item. I would suggest that the first security person forgot or was too lazy or thought you looked ok, as simple as that. There are expolsives that do not need a battery. There are chemicals in the house or particularly in an Art shop that can explode seriously or become an inferno fairly simply. The Plane that went missing from OZ is now seriously considered to be the Pilot I have been told. He is assessed to be a terrorist by most security investigators apparently. I do actually fear for Glasgow apart from health concerns we are such a soft target.
