Much nervousness and trepidation in Scotland's creative industries today after the announcement from Creative Scotland that applications for major three-year funding totalled £212 million across all the artforms (music, film, visual art, theatre, dance). They have, apparently, to shoehorn that into a budget of £90 million. So some very painful decisions to be announced in four weeks' time, I'm guessing. I expect, from this news today, that many jobs, careers and livelihoods will be lost come October 29th. Not good news for our economy. Good people are feeling very scared today, with plenty of reason

Spending on Creative Industries is devolved, up to a point, Bormes.
Scottish Government sets the budget for arts and culture expenditure via Creative Scotland, however much of Creative Scotland's budget is dependent on the Barnett plus the Lottery, which is national, they are allotted a certain amount every year from that.
However, the Scottish government has been only too aware that there is likely to be a 'revision' of the Barnett formula, with a NO vote. So if there is indeed to be a widely-forecast CUT in the Barnett, all manner of funding is under pressure.
Any reduction in the Barnett will have ramifications across ALL devolved issues, NHS being one, arts and culture being another.
We will be facing some terrible choices come 2015 onwards.

Form an alliance with minor parties only one candidate opposing labour held seats boot them out in 2015 . With a large number of SNP candidates Westminster cant ignore you. Specially if its near a hung parliament.
Dont give up work like hell to do it... Dont mention "Independence", thats dead in the water at the moment, say "fair deal for Scotland" You have momentum dont stop.

No doubt in my mind, Bormes, that we're about to be completely hammered.
Meanwhile we'll have to keep paying for capital projects like HS2, the high speed rail link that will benefit Scotland not one jot. Oh, and keep paying billions towards Trident and..wars.
Re the arts funding decisions, I'm concerned, of course, about my team's future. And if we're lucky, and continue to be funded, it seems clear it will be at the cost of another organisation as applications are more than double the money available.
I feel really sad that our hopes for a better, fairer society with ringfenced funds into NHS, tuition fees, a nuke free land are going to be under the severest tests in the coming years.
Very sad.

How is rest of country, ie UK, faring from cuts? Geographical and demographic split, as you'd expect, Oz. The South East of Engerland Shires are doing well. Urban areas less so: Birmingham, Manc, Bristol, Leeds, Newcastle. Rural areas like Wales, Cornwall, Devon, East Anglia, Yorkshire, Cumbria not doing so good. Vast inequalities. Too much money centralised to South East of England.

I just had a whole week of being slightly-less terrified, on account of being away on a few days' hols. Being not-acutely-terrified felt really good, actually In sunny moments in a sheltered sand-dune, watching Mr, Ms and Nana Rolo pottering about, picking up shells and other beach detritus--it was a bit of a relief to only feel moderately-terrified about next week's funding decisions. Care-free potterers. That'll be me one day... Attachments:

Back in the office today, trying not to appear terrified in front of my team Funding result Wednesday morning. Our subsidy from Creative Scotland's currently 1/3rd of our income. Without it, I would face some truly hellish decisions. Our team has 2 full timers and 8 part-timers delivering our national remit as a support organisation to Scotland's music scene and 70-80 freelancers working on annual music education projects all over Scotland. I can only hope those highheidyins who make the decisions believe me and my team are worth supporting with you guys' tax money What's undoubted is that many folks will lose their jobs and livelihoods across the arts come Wednesday. Because the Arts and Culture budget (better per capita than England's) is a tiny fraction of what we spend on nuclear missiles, layers of Westminster government, illegal wars... I'm nervous and I'm scared. I hope I've done enough to secure my team's future. There will be casualties come Wednesday in the Arts world. That's for sure.

So. It's Wednesday.
Today has been a very difficult one for the creative community. The applicants had been told to expect an email from CS between 10 and 11am.
Come the back of 11, it's clear that MANY have not received their email, and are talking to each other privately, going, 'Have you heard?"
One hour later, two hours later, those who haven't heard are sick to their stomachs, worrying that no news was bad news, and emailing CS to query, while others asked the question on Twitter, only to be told that due to the volume of emails, there was a delay.
Bejasus, CS knew fine well how many emails were to be sent today, how difficult IS it to draft them in the last few days then press 'send' this morning?
The results are confidential, we're told, until CS press release them on Thursday. That'll be about two minutes from now.
Back in two.

264 applications were received across all the art forms (music, film, dance, visual art, theatre, multi-art forms) and less than half were successful.
Only three music organisations have been awarded at least a 30% increase on previous years plus three-year Core Funded Organisation status.
Me and my team were one of them.
Having a rather large Bombay tonight, in the hope of a straight 8 hour sleep, for the first time in months.
There'll be much comment in the press in coming days over these funding decisions and I feel for those colleagues who're in a less fortunate place tonight.
I really want to see more money invested in the arts and a lot less in weapons, illegal wars, layers of government and you know, waste.
Night, all.
