Good luck to the grandwean, Oz. News reaches us of a pending legal challenge from an English human rights lawyer who plans to take the Scottish Government to court, claiming that charging England-based students tuition fees is discriminatory because Scotland-based kids don't pay. Eck has said that the process is legal under our law and of course education's a devolved issue over which our government has jurisdiction. Surely if English people demand free higher education like we have they should be lobbying their own government rather than attempting to sue the hell out of a more enlightened one? There's been rumblings for years from some English about the fact we have free personal care and free prescriptions but again, health is devolved and WE decide how best to spend our money.

Well, I came home from w*rk tonight to find the wean bursting with excitement; she's positively aglow! She's had her first foray into Uni life today, having met her Adviser of Studies, who has steered her through the permutations to get her into the first year subjects of her choice. She can hardly wait ;D That and tales of the forthcoming Freshers Week...and the clubs and societies she's planning to join and the new friends to be made. I am so darned grateful that my girl is getting the chance of going to Glasgow Uni courtesy of Scottish taxpayers and a government that endorses its young people by their ability to learn over their ability to pay. There's a torrent of anti-Scots propaganda going on in the popular UKE press just now. So predictable and so utterly banal. Let 'em carp, say I. Serves them right for what detritus they voted in to govern 'em.

Well done youse. A great time in life all growed up & in an adult world, making decisions and being treated as an adult. Also I remember the trepidation & uncertainty of freshers week but that soon passed. Made life long friends at Uni. Uni here aint free but what with scholarships & the HECS scheme it aint bad. One of my cadets took out a HECS loan coz its rate of interest was 2.5% & he could get 5% for cash invested. He isnt even a Scot.

News just in ;D The wean's now set to aim for an Honours degree in Psychology having passed her first year exam with a good B-grade. (A's at Glasgow are like hen's teeth...as they should be! ;D) I'm just so darned grateful we have a Scottish government that eschews tuition fees, with the stress on the ability to learn over the ability to pay.. Ms R is loving the whole experience of being at Glasgow Uni, on a course that clearly suits her skills and talents. And it's been pure joy to me and Mr R to see her blossom on a daily basis this past year. Thank you for investing in my wean via your hard-earned

EEEK! Perhaps a few years' hence she'll be able to help in more of an 'Analyze That!' kinda way.... Her big concern now is finding work over the summer. Given the current scenario, there aren't as many seasonal jobs going. Most employers seem to need a commitment of 16-24 hours a week, but every week-- and don't take on so many students because they know they'll leave again in September. Meanwhile her boyf's doing 10 hour shifts daily at N*ndos cooking the food. The job you might have thought should have been a qualified chef's. But no, they're too expensive; he gets paid £5.20 an hour. Before tax.

Delighted again by the wean's news today she's passed her first lot of 2nd year exams at Bs mainly, with an A in there somewhere. ;D Definitely a contender for an Hons degree if she keeps it up till May. Most important of all, though, she's really loving her time at Glasgow Uni and now on various committees like PsySoc organising social events-- and also getting into politics ;D So despite the not inconsiderable handicap of a Glasgow state school education, she's thriving---- with thanks to everyone who pays tax to subsidise her at Uni. She's starting to stress already about jobs in two/three years' time (because that's the vibe, particularly from very pressurised Chinese students) but I just keep telling her to not worry and enjoy the moment. As in--- it's a means in itself not a means to an end. I'm old fashioned that way.

Well Done Miss R, I hope she's as delighted as you are, although more likely being a youngster to be understating that delight in the presence of oldies No complaints here about my tax dosh being spent wisely like this...... Has Miss R any ideas on what she wants to do after Uni?

Yes, a few ideas starting to form, thanks for asking, Nota...
She's interested in behavioural research, in such fields as criminology and abnormal psychology and also using her good qualis in computing towards practical applications in areas like computer gaming, online marketing, social networking etc.
But who knows, 2/3 years hence, what other opportunities will chance along ;D
How's yours doing? You and Oz are way ahead of me but isn't it grand watching the weans start to find their way in life? ;D

Which is a bit of a pity as he loves doing what he does and we're aiming to get a pharmacy some time Very difficult, as they are strictly controlled on how many can be in an area One went in bishop ton for @ £1.2 million another in erskine for @£1.6 millyin FFS

Lovely village, big links to Scotland's history---and the birthplace of one First Minister ;D ;D ;D So, you have to invest upfront then? That's some kind of money you're talking about there. How does it all work, given prescriptions are free for all Scots? Is it a volume thing? Are inner city premises more or less expensive than outlying areas? Is it a per capita thing? Genuinely interested because I'm completely ignorant about how pharmacy licences work, Nota.
