Yes, Gilly, I know this scenario
I live right on the cusp of G12 and G20. Ms Rolo went to the lovely Kelvindale Primary and when the time came, I looked at the choices of secondary school in the area, as you do.
So I went to Open Days at Laurel Bank (now Hutchie West End) Hyndland Secondary and Cleveden Secondary.
Of course I didn't have £60,000 spare in my back pocket to consider LB but I was interested in the differences between the three just for comparison's sake.
You never know, at the time, if you've done 'the right thing' -----but for me and Ms R
(Mr R being away so much of the time) the 'right thing' was Cleveden. Not only is it 100 paces from our home (Hyndland a much further walk on dark mornings and evenings) but the majority of her primary school friends were going to Cleveden, which I thought was a really important factor.
Although, yes, a few Kelvindale Primary parents took on serious debt to send their kids private.
While Cleveden's academic record is not particularly outstanding to say the least, the school had a highly inclusive policy that saw kids from very varying backgrounds all mixing together and Ms R got *life lessons* there she'd never have got at either Hyndland or private. I believe she's a more rounded person for that
Latin, needless to say, wasn't on offer at Cleveden, like most state schools. It's a pity because I personally believe it's of huge benefit (not just for Higher Education entry, but just you know, KNOWLEDGE!)
But we are where we are.
