Definitely an upside of the internet that stories like this can be told! He sounds like a principled decent guy. What a shame it was not recognised at the time but he was punished for taking a stand.

I thought it was disgusting treatment at the time and I still do. I was also pissed off about the statue with the empty podium at the Yank University Norman ddeserved much much more recognition for his act than he got. He was a guy that stood by his principles which is more than can be said for the 1972 Olympic selection board.

More great kids, (2)12 year old surfers rescued 2 tourists from surf on a local beach. They had been swept out to sea in a "rip" When will tourists learn to ask??? each beach has a bit with very much smaller surf than the rest of the beach. It attracts tourists like a magnet looks much safer. It is usually a "rip" ie that is the seawater going out after waves break on shore. Surfers use these rips to get out beyond the wave breaking line. At Dee Why beach the surfers use this and can be taken out 1/2 a mile in minutes they then paddle to side to catch a good wave in. Tourists get into difficulties.... stick to patrolled beaches and swim between the flags and if caught swim parallel to beach till clear of rip. Waves will carry you in. Do NOT try to swim in directly. Attachments:

What fantastic kids. Saving lives at only 12 years of age. Brave young dudes, good on them! Why do some people lose all capacity to understand risk when they're on holidays, dammit? Just in the last month three UK tourists have drowned over by in Catalonia on beaches I know well. There is a flag system that's perfectly clear--red flags mean DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GONG IN THE SEA. Plus locals pitch up on the beachfronts when the Llevant (Mediterranean storm) hits Cat's shores which is does regularly in September and October. it's a fierce thing with terrifyingly high waves. One time in October we were watching the force of it from a safe distance while a UKE man took three tiny children down into it to play in the waves, they were getting knocked over by them and dragged back down into the swell. An elderly Catalan gent (local resident) shouted long and loud, waved his walking stick at them, motioning them to get away. He was ignored of course, because NOBODY tells the British what to do, right? Next morning it transpired that another UK tourist had been dashed to his death on the rocks two bays down the coast. Tragic, avoidable loss of life.

Here's a video, taken by pals of mine via their drone (lol) of the Llevant Temporal (from earlier this month) and this is a relatively mild version, I've seen it much worse.. More usual is that the waves breach the seafront, the cafes and bars all have protective covers but even then sometimes not enough to protect from damage. How thick do you have to be to even consider taking yourself--or your kids--out swimming in that. vimeo.com/141065052

great Video. They just dont appreciate the strength of the sea. We lost another Brit tourist a 31 year old on Monday night he went swimming at Curl Curl a local beach at 7pm. His mates raised the alarm at 7:30 but he couldnt be found. They gave up search on Wednesday It is full daylight at 7 pm but by 7:30 its dark , no long twilights! His poor parents are coming out poor guy poor parents. They are now looking for his body there are lots of rocky headlands and cliffs so it will be quite a job. Change LIVE surf cam DEE WHY Beach cant lie about weather www.coastalwatch.com/surf-cams-surf-reports/nsw/dee-whyThe rip mentioned above is near the rocks on the right of the screen. It shows up quite well

Yes we heard about that latest sad loss, Oz.
It just does seem to be a thing that people take undue risks sometimes when on holidays, as if normal conditions in the area somehow don't apply.
Just seen a breaking news report that a honeymooning UK couple drowned in SA. Absolutely tragic.

gist of letter from Manly Daily (a dreaded Murdoch news paper) the other day
Writer decided he liked Facebook so much he decided to practice it in real life .So when walking down the street he told everyone he met what he has had for breakfast, where he was going, what he was going to do, what he thought of his job and how he had slept including his dreams. He also showed complete strangers photos of his wife and family and his pet dog as well as pics of last years holiday in Bali.
He said it really worked!!! In no time he had 3 followers .................. 2 cops and a psychiatrist!!!!

I see UK is tightening Visa restrictions for Australian & New Zealand citizens yet again.
Wonderful way to treat loyal friends.
