Very moving, Oz, what an utter tragedy.
Over here this winter we've seen multiple deaths on the Scottish mountains, despite the best efforts of volunteer rescue teams. And I've mentioned before the losses of British tourists who enter the water over by in Catalonia at the height of the off-season Llevant Temporal.
Never underestimate the power of nature. And how very quickly things can change.

Yes people just dont know.
My daughter found out about stinging nettles the hard way. She never knew they existed.

Probably didnt make uk papers or news Guy tried to hold up a chemists in Sydney. The female staff attacked him with walking sticks (they didnt even unwrap them!) and drove him off with the help of a customer in a Hi-viz vest who kicked him in family jewels. Video is disjointed as it came from 3 security cameras www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr25Nv4x8kY

Or do you in Australia have to pay for your prescriptions? Was he not just after the drugs? Was he an addict or what? Or just a bad guy?

He was heading for drug area but these tough chooks didnt wait to find out they just went for him together with the guy in hi-viz vest. He didnt stop to tell them.
Only those that can afford it pay for prescriptions and even then they are heavily subsidised.

Looks to me like the guy was after shoplifting the drugs cabinet..
Brave or foolhardy, the ladies, I dunno really. But personally I'm not sure if its the best idea to put yourself in harm's way protecting your employers stock, only worth a few dollars or so.
You wonder if people working in a food store would have such a violent reaction or whether they'd have a degree of sympathy for someone so desperate they have to resort to theft.
Thought provoking, anyway, Oz.

They say he was armed. He is addicted to pain killers and was out on bail for trying to rob a pharmacy at the local hospital. The cops found him next day and arrested him.... bail was refused.

Talking of food stealing.
A big supermarket in the city which shall remain nameless puts out it expired food every afternoon before closing. They have 2 skips one for general rubbish and other for unsold food. Both are locked for health reasons. For some reason the lock on the food skip is broken. (the best b4 stuff is given to charity)
Which reminds me of the RAN story they had stopped an illegal migrant boat, checked out the people and the boat, escorted it to Indo waters, gave them fuel, water and food. One of the illegal migrants complained that the box of muesli bars given them was past their "best before" date

Addiction's a terrible thing, brings out the worst in people whether thru drink, drugs, gambling, food...and it's a recognised mental illness. Coincidentally at lunch with my family yesterday, Mum said she'd encountered a very frail young man begging in the streets of the West End this week. She stopped and spoke to him, asked if he had a place to sleep, if he'd had anything to eat that day. And of course gave him a few bob. Said she felt heart-sorry for him that he'd fallen into such circumstances, who knows why-- but I imagine there's a back story there. There usually is. This scenario is very different from organised gangs giving it begging on the streets here, often utilising women and young children to *persuade* folks into parting with cash. Personally I'd not rush to condemn anyone suffering from addiction. In the video you posted, the guy didn't appear to threaten any of the staff but sure yeah, I imagine they felt scared and under threat if he was indeed armed-- and that's never good. I'm not sure outright violence is the answer though. If he'd been my son I'd hope he gets the care and treatment he obviously needs. We tend to brush mental health issues WAY under the carpet and underfund services to the detriment of sufferers--and sometimes the rest of society---when sufferers become desperate. My father in law, a professional man, became, unknown to us, addicted to a prescribed opiate and once drove his car into a wall on leaving his works car-park. I think the rules on repeat prescriptions have been changed this past 10-15 years and thankfully so. Drug driving is at least as dangerous as drink driving but we seem to never see a hoo-hah about that.
