What gives with this Malaysian Airlines 777 disappearing over South Vietnam? Bloody awful, this I just read a report that two Europeans on the manifest didn't travel because their passports had been stolen in Thailand. So did someone travel in their place, it's not clear. Coincidence or what, I guess we'll learn soon enough. Since planes don't *tend* to drop into the sea for no reason, you gotta wonder what's gone on. Those poor people and their families and friends. Such grief. Dreadful.

Normally a Plane would Radio a Mayday if there was a problem and this would initially appear that it did not have time to do this, which might well mean a sudden high altitude explosion?

10 pm news just reported that here, Oz.
"Expert" in aviation accidents just stated the bleedin' obvious; it's now either catastrophic mechanical failure or an act of terrorism.
Given the stolen passport scenario that's emerging, this sounds very bad indeed.
240+ souls lost. Fuck.

ATC (someone on the ball) reported a sharp turn to the right and a 200 metre drop in altitude before they lost it

Yeah, but the weird thing is that so far, none of the search planes and ships've found any wreckage, just an oil slick on the sea off South Vietnam. Just revisiting Lockerbie, there's long been a theory that the plane was delayed that night and was in fact 'timed' to go down over the Atlantic (makes the retrieval of evidence much more complex).. Then again, a French plane went down in the Atlantic between South America and France a couple of years back, and it proved to be 'rare' pilot error, due to instrument malfunction. It took weeks to locate the wreckage, it was all underwater.

The passport thing's worrying though.

Live press conference from Kuala Lumpur on the radio just now. All is confusion. Something is really wrong here.
Has this plane been intercepted and ditched, as some ATC professionals speculate re the right turn and rapid descent?
Or did someone else take control of the flying, like 9/11? Someone travelling on a stolen passport?

It took weeks to locate the wreckage, it was all underwater. Not that it's much comfort to those involved from Lockerbie, but if it had exploded a few minutes later it could have came down over the Greenock area - we sit right below the air corridor between Europe and North America -the on-ground casualty numbers don't bear thinking about. Timing to go off over the ocean was probably meant as per the Air India flight from Canada into London ( @30 years ago) which blew up just off the course of Ireland, it was meant to go off earlier too, by coincidence my now Sydney dwelling pal was waiting to get on it to fly out to OZ - he was on an ultra-cheap ticket, being a student and this leg to his next change in India was on this flight As for the Air France crash - there was one chap on it from Gourock, his was one of the few bodies found initially..........closure for his family but not for so many others

I've been out working today and tonight so haven't seen much of the news, other than that some fragments of wreckage were spotted earlier.
You mention the notion of closure, Nota. I'm not sure I can begin to imagine what that is for the people caught up in this--or any other-- tragedy.
I guess we'll find out soon enough what happened to these 240 souls and why.
We'd all be forgiven for thinking things are so hideously random sometimes.

I am so fucking sick of the media and the emotional vampirism that is going on. What is newsworthy in showing the face of the grief stricken? Who can't imagine how they feel? Seriously the plane disappearing is news, grief is never news or entertainment. We have lost our way as a species.

Agree, Peony, terrible scenes all over the papers and tv today.
I also hate how papers fish about lifting photos of lost people off their FB pages--competing to get that 'first picture'.
24 hour news has a lot to answer for.

They are ghouls
Just as bad here . An Ozzie girl, pretty, got 20 years for drug smuggling in Bali. She\r got out on parole after 9 years. The paperazzi and TV people just wont leave her alone. One TV company Channel 7 put her up in a 5 star hotel to get an interview and were going to pay her big bucks. Indonesia said she is on parole and if she grants interviews and accepts cash her parole will be revoked. As a condition of her parole she has to live with sister in Denpassar (Bali)
I have feeling TV people dont care all they want is a "Story"

They are only ghoulish because that is what the "public" wants to see.
Since I have two people flying on two separate trips right now, I'm unhappy. I'm more freaked out over flying myself this summer. Damn it.
